' FRANK H., cursronrmor GERVAIS, onncoimi A MOWVZIENG-MAGHYINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, FRANK H. CUTsFoRTH,
- a citizen of the United- States, residing at Gervais, county of Marion, State of Oregon,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mowing-Machines, of whichthe following is a-specification. 1
My invention relatesto machines for mowing hay, grain, andthe like, and particul'arly to certain improvementsuin a vertical cutter-bar at-the outer end of the Shori zontal cutter-bar. Y I
The objections to such vertical cutters heretofore-have been that they easily clog" up with the stalks of the grass or grain" being cut, and that their usenecessitates the removal of the shoe upon the outer end" of the horizontal cutter and the installation of a special shoe for use with the vertical cutter, and the replacement of the original. shoe 'when'the vertical cutter is removed I overcome the above objections by'means of the construction described herein: and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
which-form a part of this appl catlon for I Letters Patent, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view ofma pork tion of a horizontal cutter-bar with a vertical cutter-bar attached.theretoembodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a part ofthe shoean'd-the' vertical cutterbars. Fig. 3 is a section on line 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the shoe. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sidev plate of the shoe. Fig. 6 is a detailed side elevation of one of the vertical cutter-bars. Fig. 7
is a rear elevation of the vertical cutter-bars and their mounting. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the cover used to close the opening in the shoe when the vertical cutter-bars are removed.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which,
numeral 1 is 'the horizontal cutter-bar, 2 the fingers, and 3 the rod as well known and generally constructed inthe art. A recess 4 is provided in the shoe for receiving the bar 3, the bar and the shoe being secured together by bolts. The rod or post 5, supporting the vertical cutter-bars, is mounted in a dovetailed recess 6 in the shoe, and'secured A side plate 7 is provided for the shoe and secured thereto'by bolt 6 and screw 8. A longitudinal orifice 9 is formed intermediate said plate and the shoe, into which orifice the lower end of cut- Specification of Letters Patent.
will not clog the cutters. "'16- raised' as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, any grass or grain caught upon the shoe will AA of Fig.
- ter-bar 16 enters upon its-downward stroke;
ting edge 10 of said cutter and the upper edge'll of the'plate 7. A cutter 12 is inserted into plate 7 and is adapted to contact with the vertical cutter-bar 16 as same entersfilongitudinalorifice 9. Extending for- @rearwardly and terminating adjacent the lower diagonal cutting edge 15 of the cutter- .bar, as shown in Figs. 1,2 and 6. A coacting cutter bar 17- contacts with cutter-bar 16, the cuttlng edges of thesaid cutter-bars being alternatelyspaced, as shown in Figs. .1 and 2, and. thus. adapted to cut or shear the grass/or grain as said cutter-bars reciprocate. Cutter-bars 17 does not enter longitudinal. orifice9 between the shoe and plate 7.
W'th the cutter-bars in the position shown on full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, any
grass or grain that may be caught upon the .shoe .will be directed by the upper edge 14 of finger 13 between the cutting edges 15 and 18-of cutter-bars 16 311(117 respectively, and thus said grass or grain will be cut and With cutter-bar be directed along the shoe between same and the lower cutting edge 10 of cutter-bar 16, and will be cut as said cutter-bar enters orifice 9 upon the downward stroke thereof. It is thus evident that no clogging up of the cutter-bars by reason of uncut grass lodging between said cutter-bars and the shoe is possible. A guide arm 19 is bolted to post 5 and extended forward and upward for the purpose of guiding tall grass downward toward the vertical cutter-bars l6 and 17 To prevent clogging at the upper ends of cutter- bars 16 and 17 by reason of any tall grass remaining uncut and falling over upon the upper ends of said cutter-bars or the operating mechanism thereof, I provide a rearwardly extending upwardly projecting extension or elongation 20 of arm 19, adapted to be substantially above and adjacent to the vertical cutter-bars.
For the purpose of imparting a reciprocatory motion to cutter- bars 16 and 17 there is pivotally mounted upon the rear of post 5 a triple armed bell-crank 21, having two.

arms ext ending substantially horizontallyand onearm depending substantiallyvertically as-shown in Fig.-7. Reach rod si22 connect the horizontal arms of said bellcrank 21 with the upper ends of the cutter? I bars 16 and 17, said rods being pivotally' removed and pitman=22 disconncted'from' I a cover 23? formed to fit saidorifice, vhaving.
connected-at each end" thereof. A pitman 22 is pivotally connectedto the vertical arm; of bell-crank 21, andextending through an orifice 23 in theshoeg' 'connectsto any con-v venient reciprocating member of the mower, as bar 3,.said' connection being made in any convenient manner.--
When it is desired to remove the vertical cutter-bars, and use only the horizontallcutters, as for low grass or the like, bolt.,6 is
bar 3, and thereupon post 5 may be readily lifted out of dovetailed socket'6.in' theshoefl and removed With allattachments thereto as a unit.
a dovvnvvardly'turned finger 24 adapted to enter orifice-9 at'the extreme forvvardpoint thereof, a. dovetailed shaped portion 25' adapted to enter the dovetailed socket- 6 in v the shoe, and adownwardly extendingflange 26 having an orifice 27 v therein. adapted'i'to' receive bolt 6 scribed a preferred constructionv and arrangement of parts considered desirable I in V materializing my invention,-;I WlSh -L to inv r 1 I claim is': -1. .In a mowing machine, a horizontal "cut- 'ter-arm, a shoe mounted upon the outward vgation-of said arm; v
