This invention relates to certainimprovements in printing cylinders. i
The object of the invention is to provide a rapid, convenient and efficient means for varying the position of the cylinders in a:
printing machine by adjusting devices which may be simultaneously operated and are so positioned that the adjustments may be effected while the machine is running.
Referring to the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 illustrates in end view one of the cylinders of a printing machine hav ing adjusting devices constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the'construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 1 represents one of the cylinders of a printing machine, the shaft 2 on which the cylinder is mounted being supported in a bushing 3 mounted in bearing blocks 4, these bearing blocks fitting in recesses 5 in the frame of the machine, as is usual in such constructions.
Constructions embodying the invention will include devices for adjusting the position of the bearing blocks in order to vary the position of the cylinder. As shown, the lower part of the bearing box rests on the enlarged head 6 of an adjusting screw 7, the screw being tapped into an opening 8 in the bottom of the recess 5.
In the particular construction shown, a second adjusting screw 9 having a bearing head 10 is tapped through an opening 11 in a block 12, this block being secured to the frame in any suitable manner, as by screws 13, 14, this block serving as a cap or cover for the recess in the frame.
In the best constructions embodying the invention, one of the adjusting devices, in the construction shown, the screw 9,- will bear against a wear plate or block 15 removably secured in one of the bearing blocks 4 in any suitable manner, as by screws 16.
, Constructions embodying the invention will include means for simultaneously actuating the adjusting devices. l/Vhile these means may be varied, in the construction illustrated there is provided an actuator shaft 17, this shaft passing through an opening in the bearing blocks and also through an opening in theboss 18 formed in one piece with the cover block 12. This shaft, in the construction shown, carries small gears 19, 20, the gear 19 meshing with a gear 21 on the screw 9 and the gear 20 meshing with a gear 22 on the screw 7 It will be observed that this shaft is partly contained within the recess in which the bearing is located, thus making the construction exceedingly compact. This actuator shaft may be operated in various ways. In the construction shown, it is provided with a perforated head 23 in which a pin or tommy may be inserted to turn the shaft. It is obvious that as the shaft is ro-- tated the cylinder bearing, shaft and cylinder will be adjusted, and it is also obvious that the actuator shaft is located in such a manner as to be readily accessible notwithstanding the gearing (not shown) which is ordinarily employed for driving the cylinders. It is further clear that any adjustments necessary may be effected while the cylinder is in operation. It will be understood, of course, that similar adjusting devices are provided on each end of the cylinder, but as they are duplicates only one is shown.
Changes and variations may be made in the construction by which the invention is carried into effect. The invention is not, therefore, to be confined to the particular construction herein shown and described.
What is claimed is 1. In a printing machine, the combination with a frame having recesses for the cylinder bearings, of bearings in said recesses, an impression adjusting means for each bearing located on opposite sides thereof, said means including an actuator shaft for each bearing, said shaft being partly contained within the recess in which the bearing it adjusts is contained.
2. In a printing machine, the combination with a frame having a recess for the cylinder bearings, of bearings re-.'
cesses, an actuator shaft-for eachbearing partly contained within the recess for the bearing, and gear operated impression adcesses, upper and lower gear operated ad:
justing screws for the bearings, vertical ac tuator shafts partly contained within the recesses in which the bearings are mounted, gears on the shafts for operating the ad through which the shafts e.xtend. I
4. In a printing machine, the combina justing screws, and covers for the'bearings tion, with a cylinder, of a frame having a recess, a bearingslidable in said recess arrangedto support thecylinder, a pa r of vertical HHPIGSSiOII' adjusting screws arranged to act on op osite sides of the bear ing, an actuator shaft partly contained with- Oopie's' of this patent may be obtained 61" five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G."
in" the recess within which the bearing is mounted, andgearing between the said actuator shaft and each adjusting screw.
' n aP' 'int smwhi e, th combinei n- ;wiaawa r-m a frame having a recess, a b'earing slidable in said recess and arrangedto support the cylinder, a cover for the bearing, a pair of vertical impression adjusting screws arranged toiact on opposite sides ofthe bearing, an actuator shaft partly'f contained within the recess within which the bearing is mounted, and
extending through said bearing-cover, and gears connectlng the actuator shaft to each ad us t1ng screw.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence'of two subscribing witnesses. I v V -GEORGE FRANCIS READ,
