WIRE-TAPING MACHINE.
Be it known that I, THOMAS MIDGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Worthington, county of Franklin, and State of Ohio,-have invented certain new nd useful lmprovements in lVire-Taping ilac hines, of; which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates-to-machines for applying a spiral wrapping of tape to wire hoops for use in the manufacture of tire shoes 'orcasin'gs. In constructing ,these hoops itxis' customary to coil a cont nuous wire in a plurality of convolutlons, and couple the ends by twisting them together,
the hoop so. formed- Mingv then trained over two revolulole pulleys which are thereupon.
moved apart to tauten the hoop, and during passage of the hoopojv er the pulleys inthe nature of a belt, layer of tapeis helically Wound thereupon to anchor the convolutions together. A disadvantage found in this method of manufacture is that the two pulleystend totension the convolutions of the hoop. unequally, thus impairing the (la-- .rabilityand life of the hoop.
To obviatethe above disadvantage I pro- 'vide a machine in which an endless series of radially movable concentric pulleys are employed to expand. the {hoop-to nearly the contour of. a circle, incontradistinction to the elongated. hoop contour assumed Whena pair of pulleys are employed, whereby the various .co'nvolutio'ns, of the hoop are more equally tensioned than usual.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 have illustrated oneforni of the. machine which may be usediu practising myinvention, in which drawings: 1 a
Figure l is a plan view of the machine; Fig. 2 is ahmgitudinal sectional view of the machine; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken in a plan view at a right angle to that shown in Fig. 2; Fig. i, is an enlarged detail plan view showing the shuttle; Fig. ,5 is a crossLsecti-onal view on the line 5--5, Fig.4.; Fig..6 is across sectional view on the line 6--6, Fig. 5'; Fig.4- is a cross sectionalview onthe line 7 7, Fig. 4L.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the. frame of the machine. Centrally disposed within the frame isan upright" shaft 11 which is driven from a drive shaft 12 by means of meshing worm gears 13 and '14.
The drive shaft is actuated bye motor 15 v and rotation of the drive shaft is controlled Specification of Letters Patent.
bya footpedal 1(5 and shift link mechanism l7 which operate a friction clutch 18 on the drive shaft.
Fixed to the upright shaft is abevel 19 zwhich meshes with and drives bevel gears 20 carried by radially disposedwstub shafts 21 which are supported in bearingsaz depending from radial1yextended arms 23 -wliich bridge and are secured to th'e'topl of;
the frame as shown at 24. Mounted toslfde longitudinally on'e'ach shaft is. a bearing, which is equipped with a guide flange, 26 that works in a guide slot fijTformed in the related arm 23, the bracket carrying a pulley 28 which is driven from the related shaft 21 by meshing bevel gears 29 and 30.
In the present embodiment an endless or: circular series of five pulleys 28 are shown, the same being spaced equally apart and being adapted to support the wire hoop. v from the inside, as shown in Fig.1, thu
shaping the hoop nearly in the contour of circle. During rotation 'of'the shaft 11, the shafts 21 rota-tethe pulleys 28 to, feed the l which will presently be described. f Tomove the pulleys radiallyoutwarclto tautcn the convolutions of the 'hoop,..the bearings-.25 are pivot-ally connected to fretical, movement on the upright shaft 11. A lever 3% is pivoted at the-outer end onthe the frame. An air pipe 39'is connected to vmotor to the atmosphere when swung openzfl'oo .in the opposite direction. When the vatve is opened to admit air to themotorthe" is ton actuats the lower 3% to raise the collai' 33 whereby the til-nil are; extenfledi lats .erally and shift the bearings :i and their. pulleys 28 outwardly, this outward pressure of the endless series of pulleys againstEthe hoop from the inside expanding and yieldably holding the hoop expanded, "whereby the convolutions thereof arefequally tensioned. When the valve is opened to vent the motor to the atmosphere, a spring ,4=0'

.80 1100p in a circular path through af'shuttle .85 spective shift links 32 that converge downward to and are pivotally' connected to a common collar 33 that is mounted for ver-.
v.90 frame, as shown at 35, and is' ipivoted at the inner end 'to the collar, as shown at 36.: ever is preferably connected to the'pis torl, 37 of a compressed air motor 38fcarjried by the motor and is controlled by 1a twowa'y valve l0 which establishes communication between the r'n'otor and an air supplywhen swung open in one direction,andvents the Lime;
is Wound progresses. in 21 carried by the web i3. to the guide flange 26 of the adjacent pulley 28, the arm having ing d2 carried on a web l3 that connects a pair of the radial arms the shuttle being driven from a. drive shaft H by means of meshing gears 25 and d6. Both the shuttle and its gear 45 areslotted radially to their axis as shown at 47 to receive the hoop 31. Theshuttle carries an integral transverse arm 48 to which is secured a, spindle if.) which receives-a spool 50 of tape 51, the spool being removably dle by a. cap 52. The spindle.,extends at an angleof approximately 45 degrees fro the axis ofthe shuttle, and during rotationof the shuttle carries the tape spool circumferentially around the hoop, whereby the tape helically on thehoop as the latter path through the shuttle n the direction of the arrow head in Fig. 4. -To move the shuttle radially in unison with the pulleys the bearing 42 of the shuttle isdove-tailed to slide on a guide rib An arm 53 is fixed a longitudinal slot 5 which slidably receives a pin 55 carried by the shuttle bearing. During radial movement of the shuttle the arm 53 will simultaneously carry the shuttle radially so that the shuttle is positioned at all times to receive the hoop. The drive shaft iiis feathered to slide in its bearing 56 to acconnnodate this radial movement of the shuttle, the shaft being driven by a chain drive 57 from a stub shaft 58. which is in turn driven from the main drive shaft 12 by a gear-drive 55).
In operation the wire hoop is trained over the pulleys 28 and through the shuttle +1. The machine is then set in operation by opening the air valve 33jwhereupon the pulleys and shuttle are simultaneously moved radially outward and uniformly tauten the wire convolutions of the hoop. The end of the tape is now pressed onto the hoop by the operator and the pedal-l-(i'depressed, whereupon the pulleys are rotated and carry the hoop in a circular path through the shuttle, which is simultancously rotated to apply the tape helically on the hoop. After a round of tape has been applied to the hoop, the pedal is released to halt the travel of the hoop, the tape is then cut, and the air is then released to withdraw the pulleys in- \vardly and permit removal of the taped hoop. I
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim and desire to have protected by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine of the class described, a
secured on the spin-' nally of said driven shafts to circular series of pulleys for supporting a hoop trom the inside, and pneumatically 0p erated means for simultaneously moving the outward and yieldably hold pulleys radially outward position to tauten mg them in this the hoop.
