ADJUSTABLE TROLLEY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN N. HEscooK, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Trolleys, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of the same.
My invention relates to a trolley of any description for carrying weights and which runs upon an elevated track. These tracks are formed by the flanges of I-beams, channel irons, T-rails, or other structures. The width of these flanges vary dependent upon the weight per foot of the I-beam, channel iron, T-rail or other track. In the factories, and other locations, where such elevated tracks are used, it is necessary that the tracks be installed to meet the heaviest load and for the heaviest trolley, or other member, which may be mounted to turn upon them. On these identical tracks, however, it is often desirable to operate a light trolley to do comparatively light work.
My invention relates to a trolley of any capacity, whether geared or not being immaterial, so as to adapt that trolley, by means of a slight adjustment which can be made by unskilled labor, to Operate upon the tracks of an I-beam, channel iron, T- rail or other track of any size or form, the accompanying drawing showing several illustrative embodiments of my invention and in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts and several figures;
Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through an I-beam, and a portion of my improved trolley; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my trolley mounted upon an I-beam; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary end elevation of the trolley shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary showing one form of locking member;-Fig. 5 is a view of a modification, partly in plan and partly in section; Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view, partly in end elevation and partly in vertical section, showing a modification.

Upon this track 2, 1 mount my trolley 3 which is shown in the simplest form, as an ungeared trolley, having side plates 4 and 5 on which are mounted the studs 6 and 7 each of which is provided with a head 8 and with a screw threaded shank 9, to coiiperate with a nut 10 to securely hold the traction wheels 11, 11 upon the headed studs.
The lower ends of the plate 4 and 5 are secured together by means of a connecting member 12, preferably in the form of a pin which may be provided with load supporting member. One or both ends of the connecting member or pin 12 is provided with integral means, which, cotiperating with a locking member carried by the cheek plates 13, or side plates 3 or 4, as the case may be, will permit quick adjustment of the traction wheels 11, 11 to and from each other, to fit different widths of flanges 2. ment may be made in different ways. In Figs. 1 to 4: I have shown one end of the pin 12 formed with a plurality of parallel grooves 16 which may be stamped, swaged, cut or otherwise formed in the pin 12. In these figures I have shown a locking mem ber 17 in the form of a screw having a smooth inner end 18, the screwthreaded portion of the locking member 17 co6perating with female screw threads in the cheek plate 13 carried by the side plate 4.

In some cases I may, to get a finer adjustment, form the pin or connecting member 19 with the grooves 20, 20, 21, 21 and 31, 31, staggered with relation to each other. That is a partial rotation and longitudinal movement of the connecting member or pin 19 will insure an intermediate or finer adjustment than the series of parallel grooves 16 shown in Figs. 1 to l inclusive. I may also, in some cases, provide both ends of the connecting member or pin with integral adjusting means which, as shown in Fig. 5, are the staggered grooves previously described. In such a trolley I would use two locking screws 22, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. In some cases I may form a connecting member 23 with indentations 24, 24:, 25, 25, and 26, 26 which are preferably arranged in staggered relation to each other, and with which cooperates a removable pawl or dog 27, held in position by a bolt 28 screwing into the side plate 4:. These indentations may be formed in the connecting member 23 in any suitable manner as by being stamped or otherwise formed.
It is clear that in all forms of my invention, quick adjustment can be made of the trolley 3 to fit any particular width of track 2 and that this adjustment can be made by unskilled. workmen with a minimum waste of time and labor.
Having thus described this invention in connection with several illustrative embodiments thereof to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims:
1. In a trolley the combination of a plurality of side plates, traction means carried by the side plates, a member connecting the side plates and integral adjusting means forming a part of the connecting member, and one or more locking members carried by the side plates adapted to cooperate with the integral adjusting means to adjust the trolley to different sized tracks.
2. In a trolley the combination of a plurality of side plates, traction means carried by the side plates, a member connecting the side plates and integral adjusting means forming a part of the connecting member, and a locking member carried by the side plates adapted to move at an angle to the copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the longitudinal axis of the connecting member to cooperate with the integral adjusting means to adjust the trolley to different sized tracks.
3. In a trolley, the combination of a plurality of side plates, traction means carried by the side plates, a single connecting member connecting the side plates, parallel indentations on the single connecting member, and a locking member carried by the side plates adapted to cooperate with the par allel indentations on the single connecting member, to adjust the side plates to and from each other for different width of tracks.

6. In a trolley the combination of a plurality of side plates, traction wheels, a connecting member connecting the side plates, said connecting member being provided with a series of parallel indentations and a locking screw carried by one of the side plates to cooperate with the parallel indentations and to lock the side plates in any desired adjusted position.
7. In a trolley the combination of a plurality of side plates, traction wheels, a connecting member connecting the side plates, said connecting member being provided with two or more series of substantially parallel indentations arranged staggered with relation to each other, and one or more locking screws carried by the side plates adapted to cooperate with the parallel indentations to lock the side plates in any desired adjusted position.
