LOCK NUT.

LocK-nU'r.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. BAxTnR,
a citizen "of'the .United States, residing at Newcomerstown, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in..Lock-Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in look nuts, the object of the'invention being to simplify and improve the existing art by providing a spring actuated pin arranged upon a nut which shall cooperate with the threads of a bolt to lock the nut upon a bolt.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock nut wherein the spring of the locking member is arranged below or at an inclination to one of the sides of the nut, so that a suitable instrument may be inserted between the spring and the nut, Without interfering with the arrangement of a wrench upon the nut, so that the locking member carried by the spring may be withdrawn from engagement with the threads of the bolt so that the operation of the wrench will not be interfered with.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a lock nut constructed in accordance with the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a substantially vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a bolt of the ordinary construction, the same being provided with one or more longitudinally extending grooves 2 which intersect the threads of the bolt.
The numeral 3 designates the nut. The nut may be of the ordinary character, in
the present instance, the same being illus trated as comprising a square member and one of the sides or ends 4 of said nut is provided with an angular depression 5, the angular wall of said depression extending from adjacent one of the corners of the nut to adjacent the next corner thereof and terminating in a straight'shoulder 6. It is to be understood that the side of the nut provided with the angular depression 5 has its surface to the opposite sides of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent d Apr. 1 1,.1916.
. Application filed February 20, 1915. Serial No. 9,660.
said angular depression arranged flush or in parallel alinement with each other, so that one of the jaws 7 of a wrenchj8 may contact with the said uninterrupted surfaces of the side4 0f the nut', which for distinction, are indicated by the numerals 9 and 10 respectively, and it will thus be seen that the aw 7 of the wrench is disposed a considerable distance above the terminal of the angular depression at the shoulder 6, the second aw 11 of said wrench engaging with the side of the nut diametrically opposite that engaged by thejaw 7. The inclined wall provided by the depression .5 is formed wlth an opening 12, the said opening. communicating with the bore of the nut and the opening is arranged tangentially with respectto the'longitudinal axis of the said bore of the nut.
The numeral 13 designates a fiat spring which is arranged within the angular depression .5 and is disposed to contact with the wall provided thereby. This spring has I its end secured, as at 14, to the wall provided by the angular depression adjacent the portion 9 of the side 4, the second end of the spring being disposed adjacent the shoulder 6 and being provided with a pin 15 which is arranged within the opening 12 and which is adapted to co-act with any of the grooves 2 of the bolt, 1, so as to lock the nut upon the said bolt. The pin is provided at its operating or working face, and upon one of its sides with an angular or beveled wall 16, and likewise one of the side walls of each of the grooves 3 is formed angularly, as at 17 so that the pin may ratchet over the walls of the grooves while the nut is being screwed home upon the bolt, but the opposite or non-beveled face of the pin will engage with the opposite walls of the grooves to prevent a retrograde or'unscrewing movement of the nut upon the bolt.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be readily noted that by the operation of a suitable instrument 18, which receives the end of the spring 13 provided with the pin 15 to bring the said pin out of engagement with one of the grooves 2, the arrangement of the jaws of the wrench upon the nut will not be interfered with, and the said wrench may readily unscrew the nut from the bolt. I am, of course, aware of the fact that spring pressed pins arranged upon a nut and adapted to engage with'the grooves of a bolt is old in the art, and I make no claim to such broad structure, but
Vhat I do claim is:
In a lock nut, a grooved bolt and a nut therefor, said nut having one of its sides depressed for its entirewidth to provide an angular Wall and a straight Wall at the terminal of the angular wall, said side of the nut, at the commencement of the angular wall of the depression being arranged inward of the portion of the side which communicates with the straight wall of the depression, a spring including a straight portion and an angular portion, the straight portion of the spring being secured to the Copies of this patent may be obtained for inwardly arranged portion of the side and being of a thickness to have its outer face arranged in a line with the other portion of the side of the nut, the inclined portion of the spring lying against the angular Wall of the depression and having a right angular pin which passes through an openingin the nut between the said angular Wall and the bore of the nut, whereby said pin will co-act with the grooves of the bolt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
