IMPROVEMENT IN FLAX-PULLERS.

Specification forming part'of Letters Patent No. 117,926, dated August 8, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN M. Rnnvns, of

Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of.

Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Machine for Pulling Flax or Hemp and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing makin g a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reierencc marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical longitudinal section taken outside of main frame. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken through the center of the main frame. This invention has relation to machines for pulling flax or hemp, and is designed as an improvement on a flax-puller for which Letters Pat out were granted to me March 28, 1871. It consists in the application and novel arrangement of devices to be used in connection with the small roller upon which the forward weight of the flaxpuller rests, for the purpose of adjusting the incline of the machine to the right or left accordin g to the amount of load upon the endless apron. In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A represents the frame-work of the machine, arranged usually 011 the right of the carriage and pivoted on the shaft of the wheels B, of which the one shown is keyed to said shaft and revolves with it. C is a box or trough attached to the rear of the frame-work A, and serving to contain the pulled flax, and also to counterbalance the forward weight of the reel and other attachments when it is necessary to raise the same, as in traveling to and from the field. F represents a wedge-shaped piece or inclined plane attached to the rear of the frame-work A in such a manner that a proper engagement with the cam-lever at tached to the drivers carriage may be effected. G designates the cam-lever which regulates the inclination of the frameA. Hrepresents an upright rest for the handle of the lever when the same is not in contact with the inclined plane F. K des- T I ignates the gatheringrcel, which is designed to press the flax or hemp against the forward bearin g-roller. L indicates the forward bearing-roller, around which the flax or hemp is bent by the action of the reel. L represents a similar roller in the rear of L, near the point of delivery. Mrepresents an endless apron passing around the rollers L L, and designed to convey the flax or hemp to the rear, depositing it upon the ground through "the inclined guideway N attached to the frame A. O designates a small roller upon which the forward end of the frame A rests when in. operation; P, a horizontal slot in the frame A, in which the spindle on the inner end of the roller 0 turns, and may be adjusted by means of a lever, P, one end of which is attached to said spindle. The horizontal arm of the lever P is notched on its under side and passed through a loop, Q, which holds a pin, Q, for the notched lever to engage with. YVhen the machine has heavy work it will incline outwardly, and may be adjusted to incline more to the horses by raising the lever P and drawing the roller 0 back a little. In this position the draft is lighter and the operation better. It represents an endless band passing around toothed rollers R R arran ged respectively on the reel and driving-wheel shafts for the purpose of communicating motion from one to the other.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the lever P, loop Q, roller 0, and frame A, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
