UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
DAYTON MOKEAN, OF XVINDOM, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF FIVE-EIGHTHS TO J. D. KAUFMAN AND CELIA MARKS, OF SAME PLACE.
CORN-HARVESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,338, dated November 20,1888.
Application filed April 30, 1888. Serial No. 272,334. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAYTON MOKEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVindom, in the county of McPherson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use fnl Improvements in Corn-Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved corn harvester; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 8, a front elevation; Fig. 4,a bottom view with portions removed; and Fig. 5, a detail rear end view showing the mechanism for operating the dropper-shaft.
This invention relates to improvements in corn-harvesters; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended, claims.
Referring to the drawings by letters of reference, A designates the main frame consisting of the side and end pieces and the intermediate bar, a, running lengthwise and hav-' ing its ends mortised into the end pieces of the frame, and a represents bearingblocks secured to one of the side pieces and to the bar a.
B designates the drive-wheels rigidly secured on and rotating the axle O, which has hearings in the boxing b secured to the main frame.
D is a caster-wheel designed to support the front portion of the harvester. E E are miter gear-wheels secured on the axle O. The gearwheel E meshes with the pinion c on the shaft 0, which revolves in the bearings 11 and reciprocates the cutter-bar by means of the pitman d, pivoted at one end to the cutter-bar and at its other end to the crank e on the forward end of the shaft 0. The gear-wheel E meshes with the pinionf on the shaftf, which has bearings g and extends to the rear end of the frame, where it is provided with the pulley or band wheel F is a roller having journal-bearings in the end pieces of the main frame, and F is asimilar roller having journal-hearingsin the risers hat the opposite side of the frame. The roller F is on a higher plane than the roller F, so that the endless flexible apron G, revolving over said rollers, will carry the cut corn upward and over the side of the harvester. The apron has the usual longitudinal strips, 00, secured to it, as shown.
H H designate standards rising vertically from extended portions of the main frame and secured together at their upper ends by the bar 73. Curved rods I extend forwardly from the standards H and H, and are designed to guide the standing corn stalks between said standards to the cutterbar.
J is a reel fixed to the shaft j between the standards to force the cut corn down upon the apron. The shaft j has bearings through the standards, and agrooved wheel, j, is keyed to the outer end thereof, which receives its motion to rotate the reel by means of the band k, leading from the grooved wheel 7c on the axle adjacent to the inner face of one of the drivewheels.
k k are bearing-pulleys for the band k, the upper one, is", of which is journaled on a pin outstanding from the standard H, and the lower pulley, k isjournaled on a pin outstanding from the main frame slightly in advance of the upper pulley, so that the plies of the band will not rub together.
L is a bar having one end niortised into the standard H and its opposite end secured to the short standard 6 at the rear end of the frame. Fingers e extend downward from the bar L at equidistant points and curve inwardly, to prevent the cut corn from falling off at that side of the harvester.
M is a dropper-shaft journaled at its ends in the arms m standing outwardly and upwardly from the main frame. Cross-bars M on the shaft M are provided at the ends with oppositely-standing fingers m. This dropper is designed to catch the corn conveyed to it by the apron, and from it the corn is dumped to the ground at the will of the driver by means as hereinafter described.
Nis a fixed pulley on the extended journal of the roller F, and N is a loose pulley on the samejournal in line with the pulley O, which rotates the dropper-shaft. The loose pulley N engages with the fixed pulley N by a clutch, n, that may be put into connection by the driver from his seat 0, when it is desired to dump the corn from the dropper, by means of the lever T.
P is a ratehetwheel on the journal of the dropper-shaft, and P is a clutch-dog engaging therewith. The dog I is pivoted to the main frame below the driversseat, and one end extends to the opposite side of said seat, so that the driver may disengage the dog by a dowlr ward pressure with his foot. A band, B, conneets the pulleys N and O,aud a band, B, connects the pulleys N 7. A tongue, S, is secured to the forward end of the main frame.
It is obvious that as the harvester is drawn forward by the horses the drive-wheels operate the cutter-bar, the reel, and the apron by means of the several connections, and that the dropper shaft remains stationary until the dog is released from the ratchet-wheel and pulleys N and N are put into eugagement,w11en a halfrotation of the dropper dumps the corn. The loose pulley is then disengaged from the fixed pulley and the dog allowed to drop into engagement with the ratchet-wheel.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s- 1. The combination, with the main frame having bearings thereon for the axle, the axle, the drive-wheels fixed to said axle, and the miter gear-wheel E on the axle, of the shaft f, having bearings on the frame, the pinion f,
engaging the gear-wheel E, the endless aproil having the strips 00, the roller F, having journal-bearings in the end pieces of the main frame, the roller F, having journal-bearings in the risers h, the said roller F being on a higher plane than the roller F, the pulley g on the shaftf, the pulley N on thejournal of the roller F, the loose pulley on said journal, the clutch on said pulley, the pulley O on the dropper-shaft, the bands R It, and the dropper having journal-bearings in the arms outstanding from the main frame, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the roller F, .the fixed pulley N on the extended journal of the roller F, and its driving mechanism, of the loose pulley N on the said extended journal, the clutch a on said loose pulley, the lever T, to slide the loose pulley, the dropper-shaft journaled in the arms at, standing outwardly and upwardly from the main frame, the cross bars M on said shaft provided with oppositely-standing fingers m, the pulley O on the dropper shaft, the band It, connecting the pulley O with the loose pulley, the ratchetwheel P on the droppenshaft, and the dog P, pivoted to the frame and engaging the ratchetwheel, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAYTON MoKEAN.
