To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that -I, TONY MOLINARO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Silver Lake, in the county 'of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Safety Gem- Settings for Finger-Rings,iof which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to jewel finger ring attachments, and more particularlyto the class of safety gem settings for finger rings.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a setting ofthis character wherein instant detection of the. loss of the gem therefrom is had by the wearer of the finger ring.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a setting of this character wherein the finger of thewearer is pricked when the gem in the fingerring becomes loose or drops out of the same, thereby enabling the person to locate the gem by reason of the instant notification of this i which is simple in construction, reliable and, eiiicient in its purpose, and inexpensive of manufacture.

With these andother objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustratedin the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto annexed.

Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates the finger ring, and B the prongs or tines which are integrally formed with the ring and serve to clamp the gem O WhlOh is the setting of the ring, the finger ring A being of the ordinary well known construction and having mounted thereon the safety device hereinafter fully described. The safety device comprises a cylindrical member constituting a barrel 5 having a re-' duc ed externally threaded nipple end 6 which isadapted for detachable engagement.

and in this cylindrical barrel 5 is a chamber 8 through which works a pricking needle 9. The channel 8 communicates with guide bore '10 formed in the reduced end 6 of the barrel 5, and the needle9 is confined inside .the latter and its pointed end is adapted to slide through the bore 10 for a purpose presently described.

Formed on the needle 9 is a shoulder 11 against which Works a coiled expansion spring 12, which is located inthe' chamber 8 and is disposed about the needle, and has. its opposite end suitably fixed to the barrel 5 interiorly thereof so as to force the needle through the bore 10 to prick the finger .of

I Inserted in the outer end of the barrel 5 is a cap 13 having a central aperture 14 through which passes the outer end of the needle 9, and in the top of this cap is formed a screw driver slot or channel 15 and a locking pin receiving seat or gro0ve'16 which intersects the said channel 15, the latter being adapted to receive a screw driver vfor the turning of the cap 13 when inserting the same in the barrel 5 or removing it.

' The outer end of the needle is formed with a notch 17 in which engages a lockingpin 18, the latter being normally held in'the groove 16 by means of the gem C, and upon the same from the finger ring the pin 18 will the wearer of the finger ring, the needle 9 for; i the loosening'of the gem or the dropping of become freed and will fall out of the groove 7 I 16, thereby releasing the needle 9, which isnormally retracted within the barrel 5, and the action of the spring 12 will force the needle inwardly through the bore 10 to prick the finger of the wearer of the finger ring to give instant notification of the loss of the gem from the said finger ring, and thus making it possible for the recovery of the gem at the point of location where lost.

In Figs. 7 and 8 there is shown a slight modification of the invention, wherein the opening 20 central with respect to the prongs or jaws 21 for retaining the gem 22 is formed with screw threads 23 for the detachable. engagement therein of a support- .ingspider 2 1 having the radial arms 25 integral with a central internally threaded collar 26 which detachably receives the reduced end 27 of the barrel 28 which is constructed identically like the barrel 5 and contains the adjunct parts hereinbefore set forth. By this particular arrangement the safety attachment can be applied to any gem setting finger ring, as will be clearly apparent.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

1. The combination with a finger ring having prongs and a gem engaged betweenthe prongs, of a barrel mounted in the ring between the prongs and extending entirely through the ring, a tensioned needle sliding within the barrel and adapted to prick the finger of the wearer of said ring, and means mounted on the barrel for normally locking the needle in retracted position and held by the gem.

2. A safety gem setting for finger rings comprising a member adapted to be secured within the setting ofa ring, means Within the member sliding in the same to prick the finger of the wearer of the ring, and means engaged with said pricking means and held by a gem in the setting to hold thefirst named means inactive and to automatically release the same on the removal of the gem from the setting.

3. The combination with a finger ring having a gem setting, of a member mounted in the ring within the setting, a cap in said member and having a seat, a needle sliding within said member, means for tensioning said needle, means adapted to be normally held in place by a gem within the setting and engageable with the needle to hold the same wholly within the member.
