Description

G. l.. WOODJARD.
SPRING OILER.
0 I APPLICATION FILED-m1119115. 1,178,779. Patented Apr.11,1916;
is simple and sfrAfrus i f a SPRING-GILER.
To all lwhom t may concern.' Be it known that I, 'GUY L. TVOODJARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- ()iler's,-of which the followingis a'specification.
My invention relates to. a device for lu-V bricating springs for vehicles and the like and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide ya device of this class which will retain the oil and allow it to seep gradually between the leaves of the spring, second, to provide a device of this class which is noiseless and. to which oil is easily applied, third, to provide a device of this class which is applicable to the different kinds and varieties of springs, it being made in different widths for different width springs, and fourth to provide a device of this class which economical of construction, durable, easily installed and will not readily get out of order. f
7th these. 'and `other objects in view as -will appear'hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel'features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will behereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appendedclaims, referencebeiiig had to the 'accompanying drawingsjand to the characters of reference thereonw'hich form a part o f this specification, in which: I
Figure l, is a' longitudinal sectional view of my device shown mounted on the spring which is Shown in by dotted lines the insertion of the oil can spout for filling the device with oil; Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view of the device itself;y Fig. 3, is a perspective view of said devi-'ce and 'Fig'. 4 is a same.
Similar characters of 'reference refer to similar parts throughout the severalviews. The casing 1, pad 2 and oil hole cover 3 constitute the principal parts of my oiler.
- The casing 1 consists of a rectangularlv shaped piece, preferably metallic, ,provided with downwardly extending right angled flanges 1a which are provided with inwardly extended portions 1b along their lower edges. These portions lb are adapted to iit into the usual slight grooves between the two upper spring leaves and hold the device in posibottom view of the of San Diego andV dotted lines and showing.-

l tion on the upper spring leaf. The main portion is provided atene end with an eX- tended portion 1c which is bent back against itself for the purpose of adding to the compression of the pad and making a tight lit of the pad against the upper surface of the spring to prevent the oil' from seeping out between the upper surface bof the spring and said pad. However it is obvious aseparate -piece may be inserted in the place of this portion -lc to perform the same function. This main portion is also provided with an oil hole 1d' adapted for the insertion of the oil and this hole is covered with a cover 3 which is rigidly secured to the mainportion 1 at one end in the middle thereof and its opposite end is bent upwardly at 3 to facilitate the insertion of the oil -canspout to the hole 1d. This cover is for the purpose of preventing 4dirt and dust from entering the hole and miXingwith the oil. Mounted on the lower surface of the Amain -portion 1` and A between the twov flanges 1a is a pad, prefer -ably of felt provided with-a central hole 2a' A tion.
' Though I have shown and described a 'I particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts, I do not wish to be .limited to bination and arrangement but desire to include inthe purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement, substantially as set claims.
It is obvious that with 'this construction, there is provided an oler for spring which will allow the oil to seep down between the leaves of theispring ,when said springs are in operation: that the pad provides combined means for retaining the oil, allowing its seepage, for preventing noise and providing a tight lit on the spring leaf: that the cover over the oil hole therein is so shaped that the oil can spout may be readily inserted and removed: that/ the device is 4very simple and economical of construction,
durable and easily installed.
Having thus describedI my invention, what forth in the appendedv l5 combination of a l Claim as neW and desire to secure by Let: ters Patent, is:
l. In e spring oiler, the combination of e csing provided with Side members adapted 5 to fit over the upper leaf of the spring and a resilient padprovidedwith a central hole for an oil-retainer. I
2. In a spring 011er, the combination of a casing With an oil hole therein-Q a resilient pad 'provided with a central hole for an oil retainer and a cover for the oill hole in said casing.
3. In adeviceof the classdescribed, the casing adapted to fit over top portion of provided with side members adapted lo to Ht over the upper leaf of the spring and the upper leaf of a spring provided ivith an oil hole therein, a felt pad provided with e central hole therein mounted between the surface vof said spring and means for covering the oil hole in said casing. l
4. InI :i device of the class described, e metal casing provided With an oil hole and a reservoir, andadapted to clamp securely over the upper leaf 'of a spring by reason of A e' the inherent spring of the metal.
In testimony whereof, I my'hand at'San Diego7 `California this 31st day of December 1915.
l GUY L. WOODJARD.
