Description

E. R. JACOBSON.
PENHO I APPLICATION- FILE E 3 I915 1, 178,643. Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
attorney PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed June 3, 1915. Serial No. 31,935.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMiL R. JAooBsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Norden, in the county of Hamlin, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to penholders and more particularly to a penholder embodying means of simple and novel construction by which a pen may be readily ejected without danger of soiling the fingers.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a penholder of the character specified including a novel pen clamping and ejecting means, said means being automatically moved to clamping position upon insertion of a pen within the holder, while simultaneously releasing and ejecting the pen upon actuation by the operator.
With. the above and other objects of simi lar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangements of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a penholder, constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. -2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the pen comprises a stock 10, one end of which is reduced longitudinally as at 11, said stock being provided with a recess 12 opening toward said reduced end, and having formed in its side walls corresponding slots 13 adapted to receive the shank of a pen when the device is in use.
Encircling the stock adjacent its reduced end and having its forward end' shaped to snugly receive the letter, is a sleeve 14, slotted longitudinally as at 15 to correspond with the recess in the stock. Formed integrally with the sleeve and extending upwardly at each side of the recess, are spaced apertured ears 16, and pivotally mounted between these cars is a combined pen clamping and ejecting lever 17. The lever 17 is constructed preferably of a single strip of resilient material bent to provide a forwardly extending arm 18 adapted at its free end to engage and clamp the shank 19 of a pen 20 between it and the sleeve 14. The other end 21 of the lever is bent at a point rearwardly of its pivotal mounting, and has its terminal twisted as at 22 to extend within the recess 12 in position to engage the rear end of the shank 19.
In placing a pen within the holder, same is positioned with its shank resting upon that portion of the sleeve encircling the reduced end of the stock, and is pressed rearwardly to force the shank within the slots 13 in the walls of the recess, the rear end of the shank engaging the extremity 22 of the lever to swing the same upon its pivot and move the arm 18 into clamping relation with the shank. The pen is in this manner firmly held in position on the holder and when it is desired to replace the same, pressure is exerted upon the lever rearwardly of its pivot to move the arm 18 out of clamping position, the end 22 of the lever being at the same time pressed forwardly against the rear end of the shank to force the same from the slots 13 and eject the pen.
What is claimed is:
In a penholcler, a stock reduced longitudinally at one end, and provided with a recess opening toward said reduced end, the walls of the recess being slotted to receive the shank of a pen, a sleeve snugly encircling the stock and its reduced end, slotted to correspond to said recess, upstanding ears formed on the sleeve, and a lever pivoted between the ears, having one end extended forwardly to clamp the shank of a pen between it and the sleeve, with its other end bent to extend within the recess in position to engage the rear end of the shank and eject the pen upon actuation of the lever to release the shank.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
EMIL R. JAOOBSON.
