Ide itknoivn that I., ALLAN IN. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United of Clifton, in the. county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Calculating-ltachine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved calculating machine more especially designed as an aid in making up pay rolls to enable the cashier or other person to accurately and quickly determine the number of bills and coins 'of different denominations required in paying o ii the employees.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of selective keysf' denomination translating means controlled by the said keys, and indicating means controlled by said translating means and indicating the number of bills and coins ot different denominationsaggregating in amount the total money value or" the actuated selective keys.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similaricharacters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan view of the calculating machine with the parts broken out; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a cro-ss section of the same on the line 3;-3 of Fig. l; and Fig. et is a. plan view of a key plate for the one cent F or one dollar 2 selective key.
The calculating machine is preferably mounted on a suitably constructed casing A up and down two sets of selective keys B and C, of which the keys B are marked and represent money'values and are arranged in columns indicating units and tens of dollars. The keys C are marked and represent money as plainly indicated in Fig.V l. The keys B are adapted to actuate denomination translating devices in the form of racks D, D', D2, Ds and D* controlling indicating clevices in the forin of counters E, E, E2, E2 and E4.' visible through openings A in the top of the casing A and indica-ting the number of bills of Vdifferent denominations aggregating in amount to the money value of the selective keys B pressed at the time and also indicat ing the total ynumber of bills of different Stat-es, and a resident which. are mounted to slide,

For larger amounts an extra key F is provided vand directly connected with an indicatingdevice or counter E5 for indicating the number of $100.00 bills required in making up the .pay roll, the counter being visible through? an opening A2 in the top of the cas'ingA. The selective keys C are adapted to ac'tuate a series of denomination translating means in the form of racks G, G, G2, Cr3 and G* controlling indicating means in the form" of counters H, H-, H2, H3 and H4' Visible through openings A3 in the top "of the casing A. The counter H indicates the number of pennies, the indicating device H indicates the number of nickels, lthe indicating vdevice H2 dimes, the indicating device H3 indicates the number of quarters and thel indicating de-l vice H4 indicates the number of half dollars required in paying off the/employees. It is understood that each counter has units, tens, hundreds and thousands `niunber wheels to indicate the total amounts of the -bills and coins of different denominations required in paying off the employees.l
In order to actuate the diiiferent racks G, Gr', G2, G3 and G4 when a key C is pressed, the following arrangement is made: Each key C is provided Within'thevcasing A with a plate I having a ser-les of notches I', I2, I3, It1 and I5 in register with the racks G, G', G2, G8 and G4, and the said notches are of more kor-less depthfeicording to the throw to be given to the corresponding rack G, G', G2, G3 `or G4. ,Each 'ofl the racks G is mounted to move up Aand Vdown on a pair of lazy tongs J pivoted in the bottom 'of the casing and pressed [on by a spring K to normally holdjthe rack Gr, and the keys B and C in uppermostgposition. with the usual number wheels indicating 'unts, tens, hundreds and thousands and driven from/the gear wheel O2 in the usual manner. As such counters areo the usual construction it is not deemed necessary to describe the same in detail. The racks D, D', D2, D3 and D4 are mounted similarly to the racks G, G', G2, G2, G4 and are eon nected by the same mechanisms with the several counters E, E', E2, E'3 and E4 so that 'further description of the same 1s not deemed necessary.
It is understood that the notches I', I2, I3, I4 and I5 are so arranged that the corresponding'racks G, G', G2, G2, G4, D, D, D2, D3 and D4 are actuated according to the amount represented by a key and to be translated in coins 4or bills of a corresponding' value. 'Ihe notches are of such a depth that a throw given` to a rack may be a full stroke for four coins or bills, a halt stroke for two coins or bills, or a quarter stroke for one coin or bill. If one or more racks ot' a bill or coin series are not to be actuated the notch y is sufficiently long so that the actuated plate 'does not come in contact with the correspondin rack. Thus. the throw for the coin counter is either single, double, triple or quadruple so that either one, two, three or four pennies are indicated at a time, while single, double, triple or quadruple.
It is understood that for paying say 91 cents in the least number of coins it requires a half dollar, a quarter, a dime, a nickle and a penny; and for paying $88.00, for instance, in the least number of bills, it requires one $20. bill, a $10. bill, a $5. bill, a $2. bill and a $1. bill. A s shown, for instance, in Fig. 3, the plate I for the key C marked 99 cents7 has its notches so arranged that when the said' key is pressed the rack G is moveda full stroke as the notch I is practically of little or no depth thus causing turning of the counter H to indicate 4L cents. The notch I2 is of full depth and hence the movement of the plate I does not affect the rack G at all andy consequently the nickel counter H is not actuated. The notch I2 is of half the 'l depth of the notch I2 and when the plate I Y Hs and H4 to indicate 1 quarter and 1 half dollar, respectively. It will thus be seenl that the total. amount of .ccins required for so the counters E4,

has a notch I of the depth of the notches .I4 and I-",Fig. 3 While the'remaining notches are of a depth corresponding to the notch I2 shown in Fig. 3, so that when the coin selective key C marked l is pressed the counter H only is actuated to indicate 1 penny. In case the wage Aof one of the employees amounts to say $99.99, the cashier first presses the selective bill keys B marked 9 .in the units and tens columns, and in doing E3, E2 and E are actuated to indicate four $20. bills, one $10. bui, one sa bui and tw@ se.v bus, and then the cashier presses the selective coin key C marked 99 and thereby causes the ounters' H4, H2, H2 and H to be actuated to 'indicate .1 halt dollar, l quarter dollar, 2 dimes and 4f. pennies, as previously explained. For the next wage on the pay roll, say S545., the cashier presses the key B marked 4 and located in the second column and the key B marked 57 located in the first pr unit column, and in doing so the counters E2 and E4 are actuated and advanced, that is, the counter E2 is shifted to add one $5. bill whilethe counter E4 is shifted to add two $20. bills to the amounts previously registered, the said $5.

In using the machine, the cashier presses the keys Il and C successively according to the wages as listed for the several employees so that the counters finally indicate the number of bills and coins required for paying oii' the employees according to the pay roll, the aggregate amount of the said bills and coins corresponding exactly to the total amount of the pay roll.
It is understoodl that the degree of depression of the racks G, G', i2, G3, G4 and D, D, D2, D4, D4 depends on the amount represented by the corresponding key and the number of bills or coins required for making up the said amount.
As shown in Fig. 1, the total amount of the pay roll figures up to be $4,669.21, represented by 5 one hundred dollar bills, 38 twenty dollar bills, 152 ten dollar bills, 168 tive dollar bills, 47 two dollar bills, 531 one dollar bills, 320 half dollars, 67 0 quarter dollars 854; dimes, M1 nickels and 276 pennies.
Ijaving thus. described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A calculating machine, comprising selectiva keys each provided with a plate having one or more vertical notches of different depths opening at the lower edge of the plate, a denomination translating mechanism arranged below the Said plate and controlled 'thelatte-r, the degree of movement of ifrz'egfwy v Y said mechanism depending on the depth of 'the notches, and acounter cont-rolled by the said denomination translating mechanism to be given to the racks, and indicating4` means controlled by the said racks and indicating the number of pieces ormoney of different denominations aggregating in amount the total money value or' the actuated selective keys; y
A calculating machine for use in mak-r ing up pay rolls, comprising selective keys representing money values, a plate carried by each key and provided with vertically arranged spaced notches, denomination translating means comprising vertically Amovable racks adapted to be engaged and controlled by the said plate on pressing the keys, the notches of each plate being of more or less depth according tov the throwto be given to the racks, and counters controlled by the said racks and indicating the number of pieces of money of different denominations aggregating the money value of the keys pressed.
