Description
PATENT rrron.
ROBERT I. ROBESON, OF OSKALOOSA, IOWVA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,817, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I,'ROBERT I. RoBnsoN, of ()skaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Life-Boats 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and the letters and figures marked thereon which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved boat; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view at the lines .10 av in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view at the line y y in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a side elevation of one ofthe buoys detached from the boat.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching to the top of a boat buoys with air-chambers, and in constructing the buoys in separate compartments provided with valves, and in making them readily attachable to and detachable from the boat, as hereafter more fully described.
To'enable those skilled in the art to understand how to manufacture and use my invention, lwill proceed to describe the same with particularity.
The same letters of reference refer to the corresponding parts in the difi'erent figures.
in the annexed drawing, A represents any ordinary boat constructed in any of the known styles, and B are pins or other suitable fastenings attached to the sides of the boat for fastening thereto the buoys G. The buoys O are made in compartments, being separated by air-tight partitions l). E are openings, one of which opens into each compartment, but each opening is covered with a valve, F, which prevents the water from flowing into the compartments, but will admit of its fiowin g out when any happens from any cause to find its way into the buoy. H H represent holes through which the pins, B pass to fasten the buoys to the boat. They may be made by attaching straps or pieces to the side of the buoy. These buoys C may be readily removed 'from the boat by simply raising them from the pins 13. The boat then is like any ordinary boat, excepting the devices that may be attached to its sides for securing thereto the buoys; but, when safety is desired, the buoys O are attached as above described, there ordinarily being one for each side of the boat.
These buoys may be made of rubber or any other suitable material, and they may be filled with air or gas, or anything lighter than water, so as to keep the boat above water and prevent it from dipping water. They would accomplish the same result whether put on the outside or inside of the boat near its top edge.
I claim- The hollow buoys 0, provided with partitions D and valves F,-in combination with the boat A, when the said buoys are made attachable and detachable, in the manner shown and described, substantially as specified.
R. I. ROBESON.
