Description

JOHN J. NEUMAN, or M'IDDLETOWN, onro.
IMPROVEMENT IN ICE-ELEVATORS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,804, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-1N J NEUMAN, of Middletown, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Ice-Elevator 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forinin g part of this specification.
r1`his invention relates to improyrement-s in machinery for elevating ice from the water and delivering it to a chute or other conductor; and it consists in an endless machine-chain having perpendicular projections at suitable distances along it, arranged on drums7 one at each end oi' a strong frame, having bottom rails for the blocks of ice to draw up on and side rails to control it, which frame is connected at one end by hinges or hooks and eyes with the end of a chute or other con ductor, and the other end is suspended in the water, so that the blocks of ice being iioated against the chain will be caught by the projections, raised out oi the water by the chain, and delivered to the chute, the chain being worked by suitableI gearing applied to the upper drum.
Figure lis a sectional elevation of my improved elevators, and Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents the side rails of a long narrow frame, connected by suitable cross-ties B. C represents a pair of rails placed on the cross-ties between the side rails, and somewhat lower .than they a-re, for the ice-cakes to slide along n being raised out of the water. D is a revolving chaindrum at the lower end of this frame, and E another at the upper en d. This latter drum is geared with a drivin g-shaft, F, mounted in the frame below the drum, and provided with a power-wheel, crank, or other means of applying power. G is the endless machine-chain, mounted on these drirms at or about the center, and provided with projections H, perpendicular to it, at suitable intervals along said chain. At the upper end oi' the frame a similar fame, I, is jointed to it by tight or detachable joints or hinges K, which frame is for receiving the ice-cakes from the elevator and conducting them to the room for storage, or onto the sleigh or other conveyance for moving them to the place of storage. The end of the elevator-frame extending into the water may have a iloat for sus'taining'it, or it may be supported on the uncut ice or otherwise, and the upper end may be supported by the frame I, which may be firmly supported at the foot in any way. Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of hinged frames A, B, C, and I, in combination with an endless carrier having the projections Il thereon, as and for the purpose speciiied.
