ALFRED F. JONES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BELLOWS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,783, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED F. JONES, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Heads and Bottoms of Bellows, Air- Pumps, &e. 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a vertical section of a bellows having the improved construction of heads or end plates.
The object of this invention is to obtain an air and water-tight top and bottom for bellows or similar instruments, and airtight joints at their edges. For this purpose I line the inner face and edge of the wooden top and bottom with sheet metal, and form a projecting metallic iiange at the edge. rlhe metal lining eft'ectually closes the pores ofthe wood, making it water and air-tight, while the projecting iiange admits of such an attachment of the iiexible sides that an air-tight joint will be produced.
A B in the drawing are the two heads or top and bottom plates of a bellows or air-pump. Each has a sheet-metal, lining7 a, on the inner side or face, and also a metal lining, b, at the edge, a flange, c, being formed by such metal at p the edge, as shown. Such flange may, however,
be independently made, if desired. The flexible side (l, especially when made of double fabrics d e, as shown, and fastened against the edge of the plates A B so as to embrace the iianges c, will form airtight joints. The inner fabric d can, by a wire or cord, f, be tied' to the edge, said Wire or cord being held in place by the flange c. The outer air-proof fabric c can be gummed or otherwise fastened to the edges of A and B, and crowds theinner fabric against the edge of the flange to prevent the escape or ingress of air or other fluid. In place of the metal lining a and b, other material, such as paint, Ste., may be used, an d the flange c may be formed indirectly on the wood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bellows or -air-pumps, constructed with metallic sheets a turned over at the edges, and the similar metallic sheets b reversely turned over on theirvopposite edges, and together forming a projecting iian ge, c, when combined with and applied between the wooden parts A B and iiexible parts O, as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 3d day of May, 1871.
`ALFRED F. JONES. Witnesses:
