IMPROVEMENT IN CLlPPlNG-SHEARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,774, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEARLEs F. HAELOW, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Power Horse-Clipper, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to produce a horse-clipper, the motive power of which can be applied at any desired angle with the same; and it consists mainly in an adjustable arrangement of cutting-plates and in certain cam and tubecoupling arrangements, whereby, by the application of suitable power, a reciprocating motion is imparted to a shaft and this motion transmitted to the reciprocating serrated plate of a clipping device, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
ln the drawing, A B represent serrated plates, which are of the usual construction and have segmental cutting-edges. The plate B is rigidly attached to the plate O, which latter is provided with a round bolt, D, which passes through a similar orifice, d, in the arm E. Through the bolt D runs a circular bolt, D', which is provided at its upper end with a screw-thread and nut, F. The plate-A is pivoted to an arm, G, which projects from bolt D. Said bolt Dl is provided near its upper end with an arm, H, which is provided with a square orifice fitting a similar seat, H', on said bolt. l represents a tube or cylindrical rod attached to arm E, which rod is journalcd on an angular tube or joint, J, to the other end of which is journaled the shorter tube K, both of which tubes revolve freely on the angular tube J. L represents a shaft which extends through the bore of tube J and terminates near the angle of the same, as shown in Fig. 2. One end of said shaft is provided with a curved arm, M, whichis pivoted to arm H of bolt D. The opposite end of shaft L is provided with an annular groove, N. Ol represents a case located at the angle of tube J, in which casing is pivoted a plate, P, which is provided with two projecting lugs or ears, R It', which project at right angles with each other, as shown in Fig. 2. S represents a short shaft which is located in the tube J at right angles with shaft L, and is provided at one end with a groove, l, and at the other with an enlargement, T, in which is a slot, U. The end of shaft K is provided with a circular case, V, in which is journaled a shaft, W. This latter is provided With an eccentric portion, X, which passes through lslot U, as shown in Fig. 2. The outer end of shaft Wis provided with a crank,Y. The lug R of plate P projects into the groove lof shaft S.
Hand or other suitable power is imparted to shaft WV, and the same in revolving imparts a reciprocatin g motion to shaft S, which is imparted, by pivoted plate P, to shaft L, the lugs R R of said plate engaging the grooves of the shafts, as above stated. The reciprocating motion of sh aft L is imparted through arms M H to bolt D', which operates serrated plate A.
It will be readily seen that from the construction and arrangement of the parts described the utmost facility of adjustment is allowed, the tube I, to which the clipping apparatus is attached, turning freely on the tube J, while the tube K is similarly attached to the same, thus enabling the parts to swing into any desired position within the radius of each respectively.
The position of the plates A B C may be varied by removing their bolt D from the arm H and again inserting said boltat right angles or directly opposite to its former position', thereby causing the cutting-edges of plates A B to project at either side or backward instead of forward, as shown, and enabling the more inaccessible portions of the animal to be reached.
Instead of the plate P a cog or rack-segment may be used, and the ends of the shafts L S be toothed correspondingly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The bolt D' having square seat H, and arm vH having correspondingly-shaped socket, in combination with the cutter-head consisting of plates A B (l, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the shafts L S, having grooves N l and slot U, with pivoted plate P having lugs R R, and shaft WV having eccentric portion X, substantially as described.
3. The reciprocating shaft L, opera-ted as described, and provided with arm M in combination With bolt D, arms H G, land serrated plate A, substantially as described.
4. The tubes I K journn-led on the an guiar tube J, in combination with shafts L S W mld 'plate P, substantially as described.
