Description

Gerge F. ELIAS IMPROVED HAND-GARD PATENTEI] AUG 81871 UNITED STATES GEORGE E. ELLs, OE nOUGLAs, NEW YORK, AssrGNOE 'ro M. G. GOODWIN, OE
PATENT OFFICE.
SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLEXIBLE HAND-CARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,755, dated August 8,1571; antedated J uly 20, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. ELLs, of the village of Douglas, in the county of Sullivan, in the State of New York, have invented a new and improved Flexible Hand-Card, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference, which are the same for like parts in the drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved iiexible curry-comb with a portion of the backing removed.
I am aware that curry-combs are made With the body consisting of India rubber, in which the teeth are molded with the India rubber; but, from the nature of the material and the manner of construction they are necessarily expensive and beyond the reach of the masses.
I aim to produce a curry-comb Which will adapt itself to the surface of the animalor thing upon which it is used, which will be eficient, durable, and comparatively cheap.
To accomplish these ends I use for the basis or body of my curry-comb leather, B, Fig. 1. In this I set, by machinery or otherwise, either perpendicularly or inclined to the surface, staplelike teeth, like those of cardclothing 'shown at T, Fig. l. To retain these teeth in place in the iieXible body of the card B, Fig. l, I lay over them a backing of leather, as shown at C, Fig. l, and fasten the flexible backing C to the body B of the comb by means of thread, tacks, glue, or oth er equivalent means, and to the extent that is required to keep the teeth in place in the body B of the comb. I fasten a hand-strap, S, or straps, to the curry-comb by means of thread, tacks, rivets, or their equivalent.
I do not claim any feature or combination of features shown or described in United States patent No. 92,454, dated July 13, 1869.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A curry-comb or hand-card having staple-like metallic teeth T set in and through a body, B, of leather, and retained therein by a backing, C, of leather, fastened to the body and furnished with a hand-strap, S, all as shown and described.
GEORGE F. ELLS.
