' MAY-POLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. pat t d ,23,
. Application filed July 15, 1915. Serial No. 40,072.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. MCBURNEY,
a-citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certam new and useful Improvements lnM-ay- Poles; andldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. r
The general object of this invention, is to improve the construction of May poles, by increasing the stability of the pole and-rendering the pole more attractive, andby ad-' mitting of the pole being conveniently handled so as to be placed at various points and to be manufactured cheaply; and to this ,end the invention consists in the provision of a frusto-conical base, sufficiently weighted so as to maintain an upright position, a vertically disposed pole member mounted in the base, a circular plate rotatably mountedon the upperend of the pole and adapted to support drapery, means associated with the pole to be moved into engagement with the plate, so as to hold the latter against rotation.
Other objects will appear and will be better understood from that embodiment of my 7 invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accom panying drawing forming a part thereof, in which 7 Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of the May pole and showing the base for the pole in section, Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken through the upper end of the pole and the plate, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the circular plate used in connection with the May pole.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the
numeral 1 designates the frusto-conicalshaped base having a filling therein consisting of an upper and lower layer of concrete designated respectively by the numerals 2 and 3, and an intermediate layer of wood shavings or excelsior 4. This particular filling renders the base more stable and yet admits the same being rendered light enough to be conveniently lifted. Embedded within the layers 2, 3 and 4 and concentrically located is a vertically disposed stud 5. The lower end of the stud 5 lies flush with the lower surface of the lower layer 3, and the upper end extends into the central opening 6 which has its upper end opening into the up'perend of the base and its lower end located. ad acent the lower side of the upper,
shown; in Fig. 1. Projectingthrough the opening 6 is the lower end ofa vertically disposed tubularv upright 7, the said lower endbf the tubular upright receiving the upper end of the stud; as shown in Fig. 1,
and the upper end of the tubular member being disposed afconsiderable distance above the upper end of the base 1 V The vertically disposed upright 6, receives thelower end of a vertical pole 8,the said lower end of the pole terminally resting upon the upper end of the stud. The upper end of the pole 8 has mounted thereupon a circular plate 9. This plate .9 is provided with a concentrically disposed opening 10 which registers with the longitudinal opening 11 in the upper end .of the pole 8 for 1 the accommodation of a flag staff 12 which serves as means for holding'the plate in position on the pole, and also to. provide a bearing for the plate. The periphery of staples arranged in spaced relation about the periphery of the plate, and the respecthe plate 8 is provided with a plurality of V tive staples are adapted to receive the rings 14. The rings 14 are adapted to have secured thereto the upper ends of vertically disposed strips of drapery or strands of ribbon or the like, said stripsor strands being of dilferent colors to give an attractive appearance to the structure, the lower ends of the strips or strands extending downwardly a sufficient distance to be grasped by persons positioned around the pole.
The pole 8 has associated therewith a locking element adapted to be moved into engagement with the plate and hold the latter against rotation. The locking element consists of a sliding bolt 16 l cated within a tubular casing 17, the said sliding bolt 16 being adapted when moved upwardly to have its upper end received by one of the pair of openings 18 formed in the under side of the plate 9. The means for moving the sliding bolt 16 upwardly consists of a rod 19, which as shown in Fig. 2 has one end secured, within an eye-20 in the lower end of the sliding bolt 16. the lower end of the rod being provided with a maninuat ing handle 21 which is adapted for sliding A movement Within a recess formed in :the casing 22 and to be moved laterally into slots 23 and 24:, so as to hold the sliding bolt in either locking or unlocking position:
In use, the strips or strands 15 are held by different persons and the persons hold-V ing the strands march around the pole. If
I the locking bolt 16 is inunlccking position,
the plate 9 can have free rotation resultingnin avery" attractive display of the the persons holding the strips or strands-- march around the pole in alternate directions, resulting in the spiral Winding of the strandsaround the pole. and the alternate display of the colors.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A device 'of'the characters described comprising a hollow base, a filling Within the base, and including upper and lower layers of heavy material, and aninterrneoliate layer of lighter material, a vertically disposed stud embedded Within the material, a
vertically disposed tubular member having Copies or this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by' addressing the- ,cominissioner otratentng i its lowerend extendinginto the base and receivingthe upper end'of ithestud, a pole exa tending into the u disposed tubular member.
2. A Maypole comprising, a base,a=p0le= carried by the base, a vertically sliding bolt mounted on the pole,ra circular plate rctata+i PP ndiof the vertically;
of the plate, means associated with the belt for sliding-the bolt upwardly to engagethe=- same in one of theopeningsin the circular V plate so as to hold the-plateiagainstarotaticn, a manipulating member carried by the' bolt for sliding the boltdownwardliy; and
from engagement with the openings, so as to permit the plate to rotate, and-means ca ried by the pole for engaging the manipula ingmember When in the last mentionedposi- 1 tion, was to hold the bolt against upward travel.
Intestimony whereof I afiixnmy signature in presence of two Witnesses.-
