To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, MARSHAL G. CARD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Throttlesfor GrasoleneEngines, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for throttling the gasolene supply of a motor and is particu larly adapted for use in connection with automobiles or like vehicles. 7
The object of the present invention resides in the provision of means operable from the dash board of a motor vehicle for throttling the gasolene supply of the motor to stop an over supply of fluid to the carbureter or to provide an emergency means for cuttingdown the speed.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of such a device which may be locked in various positions to limit the flow of gasolene through the supply pipe to thus limit the maximum speed which may be obtained by the vehicle.
A further object resides in the provision of such a device which is simple and efi icient in use and which may be readily attached to any conventional form of motor vehicle.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate similarparts, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of portions of an automobile showing the improved device associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the upper end of the valve rod and means for actuating the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1, showing the handle mechanism. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the valve and rod, and Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the guide for holding same.
Referring now to the drawing, 5 indicates the dash board of any conventional type of automobile and 6 the gasolene supply pipe from the tankto the engine. Positioned in this line of pipe is a casing 7 having a detachable top portion 8 and slidably positioned in this casing is a valve stem 9 having secured thereto a valve plate 10 for shutting off the supply of gasolene through the pipe. The novel means provided for actuating the valve rod 9 to regulate the flow of gasolene through the pipe comprises in part a guide or bracket 12 having at its lower end a collar 13 embracing the pipe 6 and a set screw 14 in said collar whereby the bracket may be locked on the pipe. The upper end of the bracket is directed inwardly at 15 and then upwardly and is terminally bent in a loop to provide a casing 16 slidably receiving the valve rod 9, said rod being provided within this casing with an enlarged head 17. A shaft 18 has one end journaled in the dash board and has its other end portion journaled in bearing arms 19 extended diagonally downward from the top of the casing 16. Formed on one edge of the head portion 17 of the valve rod are a plurality of gear teeth 20 and the shaft 18 has fixed thereon between said bearing arms a gear 21 meshing with the teeth 20, thus as the shaft 18 is rotated the valve is moved to regulate the flow of gasolene through the pipe.
The journaled mounting of the shaft 18 in relation with the dash board is effected through the medium of a bracket 22 secured to the dash board. The shaft 18 passes through thisbracket and is provided with an upward extension'23, and secured to this upward extension is a block 24. A
Should it be desired to limit the maximum speed of the vehicle, as in. the case of an owner who wishes to restrict the chauffeur to a certain maximum speed, means are provided for locking the valve in various positions in a manner which may not be readily tampered with. To accomplish this, the head 17 of the valve rod is provided with a vertical series of openings 30 and the casing 16 is provided in its sides with similar series of openings 31. The openings are preferably tapered to receive therethrough a locking pin 32 which is tapered to seat tightly in the openings. W'ires 33 are secured to the ends of this pin and are adapted to have their free ends secured by a suitable seal 34. Thus the valve rod may be locked in any desired partially closed position in such manner that it-cannot be released except by breaking the seal 84. It will be understood that in this last use of the device, it cannot be operated from the dashboard. v
From the foregoing it is apparent that a very simple means has been provided for efiiciently performing all of the functions heretofore set forth. Attention is also directed to the ease with which this device may be associated with any conventional form of automobile.
As a protection against theft, the handle may be swung to shut off the flow of fuel, and locked in this position by a suitable lock means passed through the rod 26 inwardly of the flange 28, as at 26.

A throttling device for engines comprising the combination with a supply pipe including a valve and an operating rod, of a guide member for said rod, a shaft having one end journally supported by said guide member, a bracket for supporting said other end and provided with a plurality of openings concentric with said shaft, an offset resiliently slidable handle member, a rod carried by said handle member and adapted to engage in one of said openings, and a gear connection between the shaft and said valve rod.
