Be it known that I, LIONEL ALFRED VVHAR- RAD, a subject of the Kingdom f of Great Britain, residing at vWharrad Vorks, Redditch, in the county of Worcester, England, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Heating and Tempering Needles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises a machine for use in connection with the tempering or heating of needles, fish hooks, pens, screws,
and other articles of a like nature.
It has before been proposed to heat needles and similar articles within an` inclined rotary tube, to oneend of which the needles are introduced, and from the other end of which the needles egress, provision being incorporated for adjustingthe inclination of the tube.
. According to the present invention the needles or other articles are heated within a rotating chamber of cylindrical or other suitable shape, the wall of which chamber is internally heated.
In the present invention the goods advantageously egress from the end of the chamber by which they have been introduced, the chamber being advantageously installed according to a cantaliver arrangement by virtue of which it can be elevated,

The means for impartinglrotary movement to the chamber are transmitted through the medium of a shaft which is concentric with the axis of oscillation of thel chamber, whereby the driving mechanismis unaffected by the oscillatory movement of the chamber. The space for containing the needles or other articles is advantageously of annular formation, and the chamber is advantageously closed at one end by a hollow end wall containing the heating medium, and which end wall communicates with the outer heating wall, the heating medium or fuel therefor being supplied by way of a tube or conduit upon which the chamber is mounted and through the medium of which tube or con- Speciication of Letters Patent.

In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory sheet of drawings, upon which Figure l is an elevation of a machine according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central section of the chamber part of the machine shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a part central sectional elevation of the machine shown in Fig. l.
In a convenient embodiment of the present invention, the cylindrical chamber a is constructed of sheet metal, there being an inner and outerrwall of sheet metal in order to form a hollow7 wall for the chamber. This hollow wall is continued to permanently close one end of the chamber, and a concentric hollow cylinder a1 is provided within the interior of the chamber a and extending for substantially the whole length of' same, the hollow walls and central cylinder being throughout constructed of the sheet metal which is lined internally with asbestos as shown at a4. At its closed end the chamber is mounted upon a tubular member b by which it is carried the said tubular member Z) being rotatably mounted in a bracket o in such a manner that the chamber projects or overhangs, while at the other end of the chamberl a removable closure or door a2 is provided for completely inclosing the annular space between the central cylinder and the hollow wall of the chamber in which the articles to be treated are placed. Said door may if desired be furnished with a mica window to facilitate inspection of the goods while contained within the chamber. A gas burner Z is provided with an elongated` nozzle (Z1 adapted to project into the end of the tubular member remote from that at which the latter is secured to the chamber in suclrfa manner that an annular space is left betweenthe gas nozzle and the tubular member. to admit air and permit of a Bunsen flame withinthe hollow walls of the chamber. The said burner may consume ordinary or other gas or liquid fuel. The nozzle d1 is adjustable longitudinally in relation to the tubular member Z1 and it may be furnislied with a. conical part which according to the position of longitudinal adjustment more or less closes or opens the ingress extremity of the tubular member The adjustment may be eilected by loosening and tightening the wing nut 7c providedV uponV a screwed stem which passes through an elongated holein the biacket which carries the nozzle (Z1. The screwecbstem may however be coupled to the arm by alinkor thelike in such a manner that the barrel is positively locked thescrewfrom movement in 'either direction at any vadjustment, at which it is placed..

The combination in a machine for heating and tempering needles, fish hooks, pens, screws and the like, of a stationary frame, a pivot carried by said frame, a bracket carried by said pivot, a hollow axle carried by said bracket, a receptacle having inner and Outer walls spaced apart and inclosing the sides and bottom of a chamber open at one end, the aperture in said hollow spindle being arranged in connection with the space in the bottom of said receptacle, means for introducing hot gases through said spindle into the space between said Walls, ran arm fixed tO said pivot, a screw for adjusting the position Of said arm so as to tilt the receptacle, a shaft passing through said pivot, a Worm on said shaft, and a gear on said axle whereby the receptacle may be turned.
