HERMANN von DER HEIDE, or UNNA-Komesiaomr, GERMANY.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN VON DER HEIDE, a subject of-the German Emperor, residing at'Unna-Konigsborn, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Waterproofing and weatherproofing Composition, of which the following 15 a specification.
This invention relates to an improved agent for water and weather proofing, particularly, porous stone. and plastering materials, earthy and fibrous insulating materials and the like.
For the purpose of water proofing porous plaster, stone or the like surfaces, it has already been proposed to coat the same with a solution of soap.
These attempts, however, have yielded no satisfactory results, as ordinary solutions of soap, even after having dried in, are easily re-dlssolved by water Wlllh" the exception of a few particles, which have been converted into water repelling fatty acid salts throughchemical interaction with salts, such as for instance soluble salts of calcium, magnesium, aluminum and the like, which are accidentally to be found in the coated surface. Further, it has already been attempted to in-. crease the effect of the solution of soap by following up the first coat of soap solution with a second coat of solutions of salts of aluminum, calcium, magnesium or similar metals. Apart from the greater trouble in-' volved by the application of two such coats, this method has been successful only tially, inasmuch as the insoluble fatty acid salt was formed generally on the surface repelling effect of the first coat of soap solution, which, although insufficient for practical purposes, is nevertheless very pronounced at first, the second coat was unable to penetrate into the deeper pores.
The object of this invention is to provide a water andweather proofing agent, by means of which these disadvantages are completely removed and one coat of which will insure absolutely waterproof properties of the most porous kind of mortar or stone, even under the most adverse meteorological Specification of Letters Patent.

conditions, which may occur in actual tice.
It has been found that by mixing alkaline or ammoniacal solutions of difierent metallic hydroxids such as zinc, copper, lead, tin, chromium or aluminum, in which the acid pracproperties of the metallic hydroxid are more active than the basic properties, with a solution of soap (fat soap or resin soap,'the alkali metal of which may be replaced wholly or partly by ammonia), a deposit of the metal salts of fatty acid which are insoluble in water and which after drying possess water-repelling properties to a high degree, is not formed; on the contrary the ingredients after being mixed together form more or less clear solutions which may be mixed with water.
porous stone, mortar or similar materials and the formation of the respective waterrepelling fatty acid metallic salt takes place only during drying. The respective metallic salts, after a short period of drying of the materials, wetted with the same, are thus not only uniformly distributed over the surface thereof, but also everywhere deep down in the pores, thus rendering the respective material completely water-repellent, z". 6. water proof even under the most adverse conditions.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is HERMANN VON nna HEIDE. [n 5.]
