object the provision of a composite mate- .rial adapted to be applied to iron or steel objects of any kind for the purpose of preventing the formation of rust thereon.
It is well known that tools, machinery and other objects or articles constructed of iron or steel will, when exposed to the weather or to moisture whether out-doors or indoors, become corroded and rusted so that the finish and working, or operation of the parts is greatly impaired. I am aware that various materials have been used for the purpose of coating exposed parts in the endeavor to prevent such rust but the well known materials or compounds all possess various disadvantages, such, for instance, as high cost to prepare, inability to withstand heat, or to withstand submergence in water. Furthermore, certain known preparations dry out within a comparatively short time so that flaking off and copsequent exposure of the metal will resu t.
It is with the above facts in view that I have provided the novel composition forming the subject-matter of this application, which composition is formed of ingredients of low cost and of such a nature that when properly mixed and applied the resultant protective coating will remain more or less moist and at the same time be capable of being submerged in water without danger of washing off, or it may be exposed to the heat of the sun without melting and run- Application filed August 30, 1924. In carrying out the invention I form a mixture consisting broadly of white lead, petroleum jelly, and lubricating oil, and while these ingredients might be capable of having their proportions varied within certain limits, I have found that a composition having the proportions of twentyfive pounds of white lead to five pounds of petroleum jelly and one pound of lubriistics.

- ssuming that the preparation has been made as above described, or in any other desired manner, it is evident that it may be applied to the desired surfaces byineans of a brush, dauber, swab, cloth or the like,
or if the articles be small they may themselves be dipped into the mass of materiaL' I I have discovered that the white leadforms a protective, non-corrosive and noncorrodible coating which has sufficient body to prevent melting and running of the maso P terial even when articles'coatedwith it are exposed to considerable heat. In addition to the water-proofing qualities these two latter men-- tioned ingredients maintain the coating in a moist condition so that there will be no danger of drying out and flaking off even under unusually adverse conditions. All of, the ingredients are themselves inert and have no chemical action whatsoever on the surfaces to which they are applied so that no possible injury can result from their" use.
If, for any reason, it is desired to remove the protective coating, this is easily capable of accomplishment by swabbing it off I with a cloth or the like or by using some suitable solvent.
Having now described my composition, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A composition of matter for coating iron and steel whereby to prevent rusting thereof, consisting of white lead, petroleum jelly, and lubricating oil, the proportion of white lead being substantiall four times the quantity of petroleum jel y and lubrieating oil combined.
2. A composition of material for prevent- 111" rustln ,of llOIl and steel consistin of D g C.
, a mixture of the following ingredients in substantially the proportions specified:
