To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that 1 VVALTEE H. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of 4ViscOnsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamps, and while more particularly adapted for limousine use may be used for other illuminating purposes.
Limousine lamps as now' ordinarily constructed are formed of stamped. spun or cast j metal parts which are soldered together to form the frame of the lamp and into portions of saidiframe the strips of glass forming the shell are mounted. Lamps of this type are comparatively expensive to manufacture and are otherwise unsatisfactory.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a lamp for limousine and other uses in which the use of solder is almost entirely eliminated and the inclosing glass shell is formed of one piece and one portion of the shell is silvered to form a reflecting surface adapted to direct the rays of light from one side of the lamp.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lamp in which most of the parts are formed of sheet metal and are removably connected together in a simple manner which will easily permit parts being separated for repairs or for cleaning purposes.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lamp of the type mentioned which is of simple and durable construction, is inexpensive to manufacture and is well adapted for the purpose described.
Tith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved lamp and its parts and combinations as set forth 1n the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing 1n which the same reference characters 'indicate' the same parts in all of the views: Figure 1 is a central `vertical sectional view of the improved lamp in limousine form. parts broken away to show interior construction; Fig. 2 is a transverse .sectional view thereof taken on line Q-Q of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a top fragmentary detail view of the lamp.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5 indicates a supporting or connector tube to which the improved lamp 6 is removably connected.
The tube is provided with an annular Hange 7 on its lower end and a coupling nut 8 surrounding said flange is adapted t0 engage the threaded upper end plug 9 of the lamp and clamp the lamp to the supporting tube. The tube incloses terminal wires 10 which connect to a source of electrical supply and which are adapted to be engaged by the socket terminals 11 of the incandescent bulb tube 12. The terminals 11 are insulated from each other and the tube and at their lower ends are provided with yielding contacts 13 which are engaged by the terminals 14 of the incandescent bulb 15. The bulb is of the ordinary construction and is locked to the tube by the ordinary bayonet joint 16 common to this type of lamp to provide for easily replacing the electric lamps.
The upper end of the lamp tube is threaded into the upper end plug 9 and the lower end of the tube is provided with an annular upturned curved flange 17 which has a threaded engagement 18 with a curved annular reflector plate 19. A similar plate 2() having its outer peripheral edge portion 21 resting upon the outer peripheral edge portion 22 of the lower plate extends upwardly therefrom and the upper inner edge portion Q3 of said upper plate is supported on the annular shoulder 24 of the plug 9. These two plates in connection with the lamp tube and the plug form the upper portion of the lamp and to which the depending shell or globe is connected. This shell is formed of one piece of glass of any desirable shape and its upper peripheral edge 26 is flanged outwardlv and is provided with an annular groove 27 to receive the lower inner annular edge 28 of the annular clamping member 29.
The clamping member is in the form of a grooved split ring having radial projecting apertured ends 30 through which a clamping bolt 31 extends. A nut 82 on the end of the bolt co-acts with the holt'to clampinglv draw the ring ends together.
