To all whom it may' concern Be it lrnown that I, THOMAS H. CLARK',

citizen of the United States, residingat Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Safes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is designed to provide a simple and effective form of match safe adapted to be stamped out of sheet metal and of such a construction as to require very Y few parts, my whole aim being economy and the turning out of an attractive article with the fewest possible number of parts, and in the simplest'and cheapest manner. In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front view of the completed device; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken longitudinally; Fig. 3 shows a top view.

In carrying out my invention I stamp in one piece from sheet metal the back A and turn up the side walls B from the same piece. The back is provided near the bottom with, a round hole a, with an elongated recess leading out therefrom so that a screw. Z) may pass through the hole to fasten the device to suitable supportand then a slight downward movement of the back will cause the shank of the screw to enter the slot, after which a screw c is passed through an opening at the top of the back-which thus screws the match safe securely and prevents oscillation so that in the striking of a match upon the parts of the safe hereinafter referred to there will be no lateral movement.

IVithin the side walls B is located the box of matches d and the matches from this box are fed into a receptacle C, the ends of this receptacle constituting extensions of the side walls and in one piece therewith, the bottom of the receptacle being formed by an independent piece D 4held in place by integral nibs or lugs'e formed on both the side walls and the bottom piece and bent over to engage each other and forming a perfectly secure connection without additional holding means. The box of matches may be held by a laterally extending lug f projecting from one side wall inwardly, and a second lug g extending inwardly from the opposite side wall at the top thereof. A cover section E also made of one piece is adapted to fit over the side walls of the body portion and to close the opening at the top between the side walls. In order to lock itl against movement I provide the section with a bent portion at the bottom l", which partly covers the match receptacle leaving an opening, however, for the removal of matches between the front edge of the section F and the outer wall of the receptacle, and the section F is also provided with afinger opening as at K. The section F has a depending ear on one side as at Z, and this has an opening through it which engages a pin m projecting from the side wall of the receptacle so that the ear Z may be sprung outwardly until the opening therein slips over the pin m and this will holdV the cover locked against movement until the Vear has been sprung out to release it from engagement with the pin. A lid G is pivcted to the cover section and entirely covers the opening in the receptacle when down but may be thrown up readily to furnish access to the match receptacle. The top of the lid is serrated as well as the top y of the cover section for the ignition of the match as at s, s Fig. 3.

I provide a holder for the ignited or burnt matches as shown at H, this being pivoted on pins to extensions of the side walls B, the pins shown at n, being simple rivets, and I make up Vthis receptacle or holder also out of one piece of metal, the bottom plate being curved and the end walls bent inward and held to the bottom plate by lugs or ears. The receptacle for the burnt matches is pivoted eccentrically and the receptacle is supported by upper and lower ears or lugs o engaging the same from the side walls. When it is desired to empty the receptacle of the burnt matches it is only necessary to tilt it on its pivots to the front.

The match box is held in position by frictional contact with the side walls and by the projections 7" and g and when the inner tele` scopic part of the match box is pushed downwardly the matches therein pass out automatically into the match receptacle.

I form a ridge or projection p cn the front wall of the match receptacle so as to assist in taking out one match at a time. There may be one or more of these ridges. The tilting receiver for burnt matches I also provide with a finger hold g at one side which aids in the tilting of the receptacle. This receptacle is not only supported by the lugs 0 but these lugs also serve to limit its movement in both directions.

make a veryv effective and simple form of match safe out of five stampings and that these are very readily bent into shape and assembled requiring, by reason of the construction of the parts, very few rivets to hold the parts in place.

What I claim is:

l. A match safe comprising a body sec tion 'for supporting the boX of matches, a match receptacle, a detachable cover carrying a lid for the match receptacle and mea-ns for locking the cover in place, substantially as described.

2. A match safe comprising a body portion having side extensions to receive the match box, said extensions also forming part of the match receptacle and serving to support a receiver for burnt matches in combination With a removable cover for the body portion carrying a pivoted lid and spring means for holding the cover in place, substantially as described.

3. A match 'safe comprising a body portion having side Walls, a match receptacle having a bottom plate forming with extensions of the said side Walls the receptacle for the matches, a removable cover section adapted to completely cover the match boX, with means for locking it in place, a pivoted lid carried by said cover plate and a receiver for the burnt matches located beneath the match receptacle, and pivotally supported by the said Walls of the body portion, substantially as described.
