REVERSIBLE CONCRETE GUTTER AND DRAIN BLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed September 30, 1915. Serial No. 53,300.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, JOHN T. S ITH, a
' citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Mount Airy, in the county of Carroll, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Concrete Gutter and Drain Blocks, whereof the following is a specification. r
The object of this invention is to provide in a singlearticleof manufacture a concrete drains and for other-purposes, the article beingadapted for either the bottom of the gutter or drain, or for the cover thereof.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a perspective view of a concrete block embodying this invention in position to form a gutter or the bottom of a drain, a part being broken out. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view thereof in position to form-the top or cover of'a closed drain. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a series of cow stalls and a gutter constructed from these blocks disposed along the ends thereof. Fig. at represents a longitudinal central section of a fragment of a gutter constructed from these concrete blocks. Fig. 5 represents a perspective fragmentary view of a landscape showing a surface gutter constructed from these blocks and a cover or culvert therefor also composed of these 7 or culvert at a roadway intersection, said cover or culvert being composed of a series of these blocks in reversed position mounted directly on the clay or earth. Fig. 7 represents a longitudinal section of a barn or house gutter and a closed outer drain in continuance with said gutter. Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal section of a barn or house gutter and a closed outer drain in continuance with said gutter, the earth forming the bottom of said drain.
The same reference numbers indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
A block 10 molded of concrete or reinforced concrete constitutes an article of man ufacture embodying this invention and adapted for either. under or over use as described or conjunctively for both the under and over use to form gutters, drains, culverts and the like. This block comprises a rectangular horizontal central portion 11, two angular portions 12 and 13 integral with the outer ends of said central portion and inclined outward therefrom and two horizontal outward extensions 14 and 15 integral with said inclined portions. The outer faces16 and 17 of the inclined or angular portions 12 and 13 form braces which tend to hold the blocks against lateral displacement and the outer faces 18 and 19 of the horizontal extensions 14 and 15 provide broad bearing surfaces which hold the blocks or slabs against vertical displacement. The horizontalcentral portion 11 is provided on one edge adjacent to its outer face with a rib or tongue 21 and along its opposite edge adjacent to its inner face with a rib or tongue 22, This horizontal central portion 11 is also provided on one edge adjacent to its outer face with a recess 23 corresponding in depth to the rib or tongue 21 and along its opposite edge adjacent to its inner face with a recess 24 corresponding in depth to the rib or tongue 22. These ribs interlock with each other and with said recesses when the blocks are in alinement to form a gutter, a drain or cover therefor.
In the use of these blocks to form an open channel or gutter, they are set in the'earth, floor or other place, side by. side, with their central portions downward as illustrated in Fig. 3 and at the opposite'ends of Fig. 5. In forming a closed channel or drain they are placed side by side with their central portions 11 upward as indicated in the central portion of Fig. 5 and in Fig. 6.
When the blocks are laid to form a drain, the central fiat portions 11, the outwardly flaring angular portions 12 and 13 and the horizontal outward extensions 14: and 15 afford horizontal bearings in two different planes and intermediate inclined bearings,
said several bearings cooperating to hold the blocks in normal position in the drain, and
the outward horizontal extensions of the bottom blocks and cover blocks meet face to face and afiord large contact bearing surfaces which tend to hold the cover in position on the'bottom of the drain.
This single structure is readily adapted to the various parts of a drainage scheme, is cheaply manufactured, can be set up without skilled labor and forms a gutteror drain.
of great durability.
I claim as my invention: Y 1. An article of manufacture consisting of a reversible concretegutter and drain block adapted to form a section of the bottom or top of a channel or conduit and comprising a horizontal central portion, angular portions integral therewith at Opposite ends site ends thereo'f and horizontaloutward ex tensions integral with said angular-portions, said horizontal central portion being provided on its opposite'edges with ribs'in'different planes and with recesses in different planes adjacent to said ribs 'and'ada'pted to interlock with corresponding recesses and ribs of adjacent blocks when placed in alinement therewith to form the bottom or top of a gutteror drain. v V
3. A drain'having a bottom composed'of a'serie's of concrete blocks, "eachcomprising a horizontal central portion, angular portions integral therewith at opposite ends thereof, and horizontal outward extensions integral with said angular portions, said central portion being provided-on its opposite edges with' ribs and recesses which inter- Gopie s ofthis patent may be obtainedlfor'i ive cents each bynaddressingtlie V WashingtonyDtC.
lock with corresponding recesses and ribs of the adjacent blocks. 7 I
4:, A covered drain, comprising a bottom composedof series of drain blocks each comprising a horizontalcentral portion, angular portions integral therewith at oppo-v site ends thereof and horizontal outward ex: tensions integral with said angular portions, said central portion'being provided on its opposite edges with ribs and recesses inter looking with corresponding recesses and ribs of adj acentblocks, and a cover composed of a series o'fblocks corresponding in structure and'relation with theblocks'of said bottom' and disposed in inverted position 5 over said bottom blocks; Q
5. Admin comprising abottom composed ofa series of drain-block's each having a central fiat portion, outwardly flaring angular portions integral therewith at opposite,
ends thereof and'horizontal outward eXtensions' integral with the upper ends of'js aid outwardly flaring angular portions, said central fiat 7 portion and horizontal extensions afiording horizontal bearings in two difie'rent planes and inclined intermediate bearings between said horizontal bearings, said several bearings cooperating to holdsaid blocks in normal position-in the drain, and acover composed of a'series of blocks corresponding in structure jandfrelation with th bloeks 01% said 'bottom and disposed in inverted o ition over said bottom blocks; the outward horizontal extensions of the bcttcm blocks and cover blocks'me'etingfac to face and 5 serving as contact bearing surfaces for holding said coverin position 'on saidb'o'ttbm.
