To all whom it may concern: i

Be it known that L Q LQIV Krne, a citizen of the UnitedStat'es, andja resident of Fort Worden, in the county of Jefferson and State of'Washington, have'invented an- Improvement in Smoke-Consumers, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates generally to improvements in smoke consumers adaptable for use in connection with smelters, furnaces, and like apparatus and arranged to effectively withdraw the smoke and poisonous gases therefrom, with a desired quantity of air for final disposition atanother point.

I preferably utilize the apparatus shown in the several figures of the accompanying drawing, which drawing forms a part of 7 this specification and wherein-- Figure 1 is a view more or less diagrammatic and partly in elevation and partly broken away and in section illustrating my improvements in connection with a settling chamber and washing tank separate from the furnace, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view looking at the stack, the adjustable withdrawing cap and the suction pipe. 7

Referring now to these figures I provide a cap 0 arranged to be disposed at the top of a furnace stack A and which is adjustably connected to the adjacent end of a suction pipe B disposed immediately above the stack A, this end of the suction pipe B being effectively supported in position by braces D connecting the same with the said stack.

The cap 0 may be raised and lowered by means of operating cords or cables G connected thereto and extending over pulleys mounted at selected points in the length of the suction pipe 13, the said cords or cables G following the pipe B therefor, as shown in Fig. 1, and extending downwardly within convenient reach of the operator. Thus the cap ,0 traps the smoke and fumes rising from the stack A so that they are sucked into the adjacent end of the pipe B at the opposite end of which pipe is a fan K which creates the suction. At the same time, fresh air is also sucked into the pipe B due to the adjustable spacing of thecap G from the stack A so that the fumes and smoke thus impregnated with fresh air may be better acted upon at a distant point.

the lower angular end of a shaft E mounted axially through the (ia'p'C and the adjacent endof thesuction pipe B, the upper end of said shaft projecting exteriorly as best seen in Fig. 1 and being provided with a vane E whereby to constantly maintain the shield H in the proper position to prevent wind from blowing the smoke and fumes out of the space between the stack and the cap C before mentioned. In this way the smoke and fumes are effectively withdrawn from the stack and into the suction pipe B with a desired admixture of fresh air and are carried to the fan casing K from which point they are discharged through a discharge pipe J which may lead to a washing device as shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 1 the discharge pipe J of the fan leads to the base of a vertically disposed settling chamber U, from the upper end of which chamber a pipe U leads to a washing tank The settling chamber U has a lower door Q through which the residue of combustion may be removed, and is also provided with an intermediate inclined baffle plate R whereby to collect such residue in the chamber due to the checking of the volume of gases so as to allow the heavier particles to drop.

In the tank N a constant level of washing fluid is maintained by means of an inlet pipe T having a valve V at its inner end antomatically controlled by a float X, and below the thus constantly maintained level of fluid extends the end of the pipe U before mentioned as leading from the settling chamber U. Within the tank N above the level of its fluid extends a fluid pipe Y having downwardly opening spray apertures and constantly supplied with fluid which is sprayed downwardly from such apertures, by means of a pump 0, the intake pipe 0 of which is extended into the lower portion of the tank.
