ROTARY ENGRAVING PRINTING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916..
Application filed October 16, 1915. Serial No. 58,285.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Farm LAMEY, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at 9 Spiegelvorstadtstrasse, Miilhausen, Alsace, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Engraving Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention.
My invention relates to engraving presses of the rotary cylinder type, in which the engraving is made on cylindrical copper or steel plates fitted to a form cylinder for carrying them. Such a printing press whose form cylinder is arranged for rotation in opposite directions, is usually provided with two wipers one on each side thereof, and when the cylinder is rotated in one direction one of the wipers remains inoperative, and when said cylinder rotates in the opposite direction the other wiper remains inoperative. The wipers on the opposite sides of the form cylinder of such presses are usually provided with separate and independent actuating mechanisms.
The present invention has for its. object the simplification of such mechanism, and the construction of asingle wiper actuating mechanism, from which either wiper may be actuated, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, in which like parts are similarly designated-Figure 1 is a side elevation of so much of a printing press as is necessary to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a diagram illustrating the movement of the related parts in a direction opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the wipers and their actuating mechanisms.
In the frame S of the press is mounted in bearings 1 the form cylinder D, so arranged as to be rotated in opposite directions.
Arranged on opposite sides of th s cylinder are the wipers R and B. By means of screw spindles these wipers may be moved toward and from the form cylinder D.
The wiper R is carried by levers 8 pivoted in standards 2 mounted on a slide 3 reciprocable parallel to the form cylinder. This slide 3 is reciprocable on two lateral beds 4 on the frame, and that are movable toward and from the cylinder by hand screws B. The end of the slide 3 has a pin and slot connection with the arm 0' of a bell crank lever C, C, mounted on a vertical pivot 6 in a bracket 7 extending from one side of the frame S. The tails of levers 8 are connected to a bar 9 which is acted upon by a roller 32, lifted up by a not shown weighted lever to urge the wiper against the form cylinder.
The wiper R is mounted on levers 10 that are pivotally mounted on a rod 11 whose ends are mounted in slides 12 in which this rod 11 is longitudinally slidable. These slides 12 are movable to and from the form cylinder D by means of hand screws 13. The ends of the levers 10 are provided with perforations 14 in which engage hooks 15 on flexible connections 16 passing over pulleys 17 and supporting counterweights 18. The rod 11 has a sleeve 19 mounted between stops 20 and has a pivot pin 21 to which is connected by a link 22 the arm D of hell crank lever D, D. This bell crank lever is pivotally mounted at 23 in a bracket 24 on the press frame.
Mounted in a bracket 25 is a worm 26 whose shaft is provided with a pinion 27 driven by a second pinion 28 which latter receives motion from any suitable driving member. The worm 26 drives a worm wheel 29 on whose spindle is mounted a crank disk A having a diametrical slot 30 in which is adjustable a crank pin 31. On this crank pin 31 is a connecting rod B which may be connected either to the arm 0 or to the arm D of the two bell crank levers for reciprocating the wipers.
In the example illustrated the wiper R will receive a greater longitudinal movement than wiper R, as the latter is mounted between the sides of the frame S, while the former is entirely free at its ends. For this reason the arms of the actuating bell cranks are of different lengths, and the extent of movement imparted to the wipers is dependent upon the length of the arms of these bell-crank levers, which are therefore proportioned to the extent of movement to be imparted to the wipers. The crank'pin 31 is also adjustable in slot 30 and thus afi'ords an adjustment for the extent of movement of the wipers.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a rotary engraving printing press, the combination with the form cylinder thereof, of a form cylinder wiper on each side of the latter, and a wiper actuating mechanism common to both wipers.
2. In a rotary engraving printing press,
the combination with the form cylinder In testimony whereof I have signed my thereof, of a form cylinder wiper on each name to this specification, in the presence of side of the latter, a wiper actuating mechatwo subscribing Witnesses. nism comprising a crank disk, a bell crank FRITZ LAMEY.
5 lever for each wiper, and a connecting rod Witnesses:
on said crank disk arranged to be connected AUG. BURGERT, to either bell crank lever. AUG. PEATAT/
