Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 5, 1912. Serial No. 681,810.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE OKANE, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Duplicating-Machines, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to devices of the class claimed in Letters Patent of the United States #901,121 granted to me October 13, 1908; including a rotary printing drum carrying removable type, and having an underscore rule strip held by and between said type.
My improvement relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of the rule strip, and, as hereinafter described, consists in providing a strip adapted to fit in the interstices between adjoining rows of type on said drum, and having upon one side of said strip a longitudinal rib adapted to fit in corresponding grooves in the adjacent type edges; so that said strip may be inserted and removed longitudinally with respect to said interstices, but not otherwise.
My invention comprises the various'novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the drawings; Figure I is a side elevation of a rotary printing drum and re-' ciprocatory plane platen, constituting the printing couple of a duplicating-machine. Fig. II is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of said drum with letter tvpe and underscore rule strips set therein. Fig. III is an end view of the elements shown in Fig. II. Fig. IV is a perspective view of a detached underscore rule strip.
In said drawings; the rotary printing drum 1, has the undercut channels 2, extending in its perimeter parallel with its axis, and, each type 3, and 4:, is provided with flanges 6, complementary to and fitted in said channels. When said flanged type are fitted in single spaced relation as shown in Figs. II. and III, there are interstices 7 extending between them parallel with the axis of the cylinder 1, and of such width as to receive the underscore rule strips 8. However, it may be observed that said strips do not enter said channels 2, in the printing drum, or engage the latter, but are maintained type high by the ridges on said printing drum between said channels 2.
Said strips 8 each have a rib 9 extending longitudinally in unitary relation there with, adapted to fit in the corresponding grooves 10 in the adjacent edges of said type 3, as shown in Fig. III; so that said strips may be inserted and removed longitudinally with respect to the rows of type on said drum 1, but not otherwise, accidental displacement thereof being prevented by engagement of said ribs 9 in said type grooves 10.
When the type have been assembled in the printing drum'l, in the desired relation, the inked ribbon 12, is drawn over the type faces and secured by connection with the rollers 13 and 14, which are mounted in said cylinder as indicated in Fig. I, so that when a sheet of paper is interposed between the platen and said drum, and the latter turned until the platen is shifted to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. I, said sheet is imprinted with an impression made from said type through said inked ribbon and the words in single spaced relation are underscored.
Said underscore strips 8, may also be employed to underscore letter type which .are in double spaced relation, in which case they may be held between the letter type 3, and blank type 4, as shown in Fig. II.
I have found it convenient to make the ribbed underscore strips above described of steel, by a rolling operation, the metal being soft when rolled and subsequently tempered so as to be both flexible and resilient. However, I do not desire to limit myself to such metal or method of manufacture. For instance, such strips may be made of brass, by a rolling operation which forms the rib on the strip and renders the latter resilient, or, such strips may be cast of type metal.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement above described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1.
