COOKING UTENSIL.
Application filed August 19, 1914. Serial No. 857,436.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL BERTHOLD, a
" citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cooking utensils generally, and doughnut cookers particularly, and is designed primarily to improve the device disclosed in Patent Number 1,047,608 granted December 17, 1912.
In the device of the patent above referred to it is necessary to open the basket manually as well as swing the same about its pivots in this manner. The present invention provides a means whereby the basket may be locked, and at the same time opened or swung about its pivots without manual contact with the basket.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement ofparts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying draw- 111"5.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the cooker. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing in dotted lines the cover opened or raised. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the basket swung about its pivots. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken along line 44 of Fig. 1 to illustrate the lock between the sections of the basket and its operating means. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken along line 5 -5 of Fig. 4 and illustrates the lock.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawing 10, and 11 designates two sections which make up the basket B of the cooker, said sections being hinged together at 12. These sections are stamped from sheet metal, the perforations therein being formed by the removal of portions of the metal. Beads 13, 14 are formed on the'edges of the circumferential flanges 10' and 11' of the sections 10, and 11 respectively. The lower section 10 is provided with an aperture 16, in the flange 10' and below the head 14 thereof, said aperture being diametrically disposed with respect to the hinge 12. It is with this aperture 16 that the latch carried by the upper section 11 cotiperates to lock the sections 10, and 11 together. This-latch comprises a strip of spring metal 17 riveted or otherwise secured to the in terior of the flange of the upper section 11,
and rebent outwardly to form the hook 18 which enters the aperture 16 and engages under the bead 14 to secure the sections together. A second plate 19 is mounted between the latch 17 and flange 11 and has a right angular projection or arm 20v at itsv be forced against'the latch 17, moving the same inwardly to release the hook 18 from engagement with the cooperating flange 10 and permit the sections to be opened. Therefore in order to move the arm 20 and plate 19 the upper section 11, adjacent to the latch 17, carries a bracket 21. The bracket is provided with an arm 22 which is curved over the bead 14 and terminates in the horizontal bearing 23, said bearing having a shaft 24 rotatably mounted therein in substantially the same horizontal plane as the arm or projection 20. The outer end of this shaft 24 is flattened as at 24 to furnish a mounting for the rod 25 which is mounted for oscillation therein. Keyed to the lower end of this rod 25 and resting fiush with the flattened portion 24 of the shaft 24, is a cam 26 arranged to contact with the outer curved edge of the arm or 1 EMIL BEBTHOLD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASEIGNOR'TO FRIDA BERTHOLD, OF CHICAGO,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 3131-, 21 1916, v
projection 20 upon the proper oscillation 1 of the rod 25. This cam 26 is provided with a curved contact surface 26 for coiiperation with the arm 20 and it also has a stop 26 at its opposite end. \Vhen the rod 25 is oscillated the cam 26 contacts with the arm or projection 20 and forces the latch 17 inwardly, thus releasing the upper section 11 and permitting it to be raised by a pull on the rod.
A plate 27 is pivoted on each side of the lower section 10 and is provided with the extensions 28, whichrest on the ground to retain the bail carried by said plates in a vertical position. This bail comprises the pair of wires 29, which are medially intertwisted as at 30, with a ring 31, and have their ends held parallel by the bars 32. The
ends of the wires 29 pass under the straps 33 formed from the plates 27 and are fric tionally heldthereby slidable. Mountedon the parallel ends of the wires 20 through'the" mediumot the straps 34' are the plates '35 in the kettle by the adjustment of the plates 35;
The red'2 5lterminates in 37 andpasses through theyring 31 in the bail 30. This rod25 is also provided with-a medial hook 38,- which, when the upper section 11 ofthe basket is releasedsandraised by the rod, will. engage the ring and hold the section in its elevated position. I If it is desired to swingthe basket B about its pivots the rod 25 1spulled upwardly, and as the rod is secured to one side of the basket the same 'will swingto the position in ltig'. 3; By moniit'ing therod 25 on the shaft-24, this shaft being" rotatablyfmounted, the said rod may vswing with respect to. the basket.
, When it is desired to reverse or turn the basket "B over, the upperiend'of the rod 25,
is given a quickpull upwardby the WOIk-' man moving said rod from the position shown full lines in Fig. 2 to the dotted line position of the rod-in the'same figure.
This tilts the basket on its center pivots,- and said basket from its own momentumturns completely over reversing its position in the'support, as shown in Fig; 3. When: desiredthe upper or topsection of the has ket may be lifted or. turned up from the lower'sec'tion as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. upward 'onth rod 25 afterits lower end is unlocked or disengaged from the lower section and is for the purpose of exposing the cooked articles so that'they may be readilyremoved from the basket; \Vhile the preferred form of the This is"accomplished pulling 4 inven' tion is shown and d'escr'ibed, it will be un f derstcod' that many changes may be made in the details of construction withoutjde-" parting from the spirit What is claimed is r I, 1.
