To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IVILLIAM DAVID Mo- CORMACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to water gages, and has for an object to provide an improved water gage which will be constructed to provide a plurality of sight openings whereby the water level may be observed by the engineer and fireman in their respective positions in the locomotive cab, and may be observed through a central opening from the deck of the locomotive.
Another object of the present invention resides in providing an improved water gage constructed of few and simple parts readily united and disassembled to renew glasses, and to provide an improved water and steam tight joint adapted to be adjusted as required.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a water gage constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the improved water gage; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44- of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the casing of the improved water gage is divided longitudinally, and constructed of a pair of sections 1 and 2 assembled together as hereinafter described, and connected in the boiler circuit by nipples 11 formed with hexagonal or other enlargements 10 for engagement by a suitable tool to connect and disconnect the same.

As advantageously disclosed in Fig. 4., the front section 1 of the casing is constructed three-sided and provided with sight openings '7, one in each side thereof, whereby the engineer and fireman from their respective positions in the locomotive cab may observe the height of the water therethrough, and whereby the water level may be also observed from the deck of the locomotive from the central sight opening. The section 1 is further provided with shoulders 16 and flanges 17 extending thereabo-ve for receiving the base section 2 of the casing, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 1.
In the section 1 of the casing is located the water glass 8, constructed complemental of the casing section and supported therein by gaskets 14 interposed between the same and the interior wall of the casing section. The water glass 8 is preferably formed substantially semi-circular on its interior, and may be corrugated as shown in Fig. 4., if desired. Between the base section 2 of the casing and the water glass 8 are provided complemental grooves for receiving a packing 13, which may be round as shown, or of other desired cross sectional configuration, and the same is arranged to provide a water and steam tight joint between the respective parts.
The casing sections 1 and 2 are adjustably secured together by yokes 3 straddling the base section 2 and formed at their opposite ends into eyes 9, the latter being arranged to be received between corresponding pairs of perforated ears 6 projecting laterally from the front section 1 of the casing. The yokes 3 may be of any suitable number, preferably three, as herein shown, and are secured in position by rods 5 passed through the alining eyes in the several eyes 9 and ears 6, as will be understood. The bolts 5 are preferably headed, as indicated at 12, and may be provided with any suitable devices for maintaining the same in position and preventing their accidental displacement during use.
The yokes 3 are provided with set screws engaging the base section 2 of the casing, and may be tightened as required to force the sections together and compress the packing 13 to provide a tighter joint in the event of leakage. At each end thereof the front section 1 of the casing is advantageously formed with bosses or enlargements 15, for providing extensive surfaces for the and withdrawing the rods 5; from their engagement with the respective eyes 9 and ears 6, whereupon the yokes 3 maybe removed and the casing sections 1 and 2 pried apart; T he water glass 8 may then be removed, cleaned, and replaced, or substituted by a fresh glass and the packing 13 and 14: may be renewed, as required, and the base section 2 again inserted between the flanges-17 of the front section 1. The yokes are now replaced and the rods 5 again inserted, when the set screws 4 may be tightened to secure the required amount of pressure on the gasket 13 and the water gage connected injthe' boiler circuit, as will be now understood.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction .and arrangements of parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore do not wish to be limited to such features excepthas may be required by the claim. v .v V g V '1 claim:
