BGEILER CONNEUTION.
Specification of Lettcrslatent. I -Pa,i;e tefl A 26 1913 Originulapplication filed October 12, 1912, Serial No. 725;547. Divided and this application filed Itanuery 9,
,Be it known that I, DAVID Wiener, a citizen of the United States, residingat Galesburg, in the county of Knox and State of ltllinois, have invented a new and useful. Boiler Connection, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boilers and more particularly to means for connecting water shown.
pipes to headers and the like.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel form of nut for use in assembling; the pipes, said nut beingholl'ovv and constituting a container for portions of the Water being heated whereby increased l1eat1ng surface is produced and the/connections are prevented from burning off. when subjected to the heat in the furnace.
The device is more particularly a division of an application filed by me in the United 'States Patent Oflice on October 12, 1912,
said application bearing Serial No. 725,547.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes inthe precise embodiment of-the invention herein disclosed, can be made Within the scope of What is claimed, Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I
In the accompanying drawings the pre-' ferred form of the invention has been" In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a "portion of a furnace, one side Wall and the parts connected thereto being removed, and the top of the casing, being.
shown in section. Fig. 2 is a section on line A- B Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through one of the devices employed ."for coupling a pipe to a header.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 2 designates the hollow front of Serial N0. MI-72.
- ends, with tubular connections 10 whereby communication, between the sections is maintained. i
Arranged adjacent the inner sideof mom 7 is a header 25 provided in its back Wall with a desired number of openings 26 disposed preferably in staggered relzition. This header is in communication with the sections 7 through push nipples 27, there desired manner, upon the upper end of a grate pipe 29', this pipe extending down wardly below the header 25 and thence forwardly. The coupling member 29 has its outer or exposed end closed, as shown particularly in Fig 3' While its other end, which is located inside of thewheader 25, isopen. 'llhus ater may freely circulate from pipe 29 through coupling member 29' to the g lieader.25 and vice versa.
-Fitteid"within the header Wall and di 1 rectly opposite each opening 26, is the cylinclriczil; portionfit) of a hollow nut 31. One end of this nut is preferably reduced in diameter and provided Witha threadedbore 32201" the reception of one end portion of ,abolt 33. This bolt, is arranged axially within the coupling 29 and engages the closed end of the coupling. A flange this formed'upon the nut 30 and is adapted to be seated Within a counter borefifiiorined in the front face of the header One or more openings 36 are providcdwithin that portion of nut 31 projecting into the header 25 and Water is thus free to circulate from the header and into and out of the not 31. Obviously, therefore, all danger of the nut burning oil under the intense heat to which it is subjected is eliminated.
As hereinbefore stated, the openings 26 are preferably disposed in staggered relation and, therefore, the couplings 52%? are similarly arranged. -F1irtherniore, the coupli'ngs constituting the upper row are pret erably of greater length. than those constitutring particularly to Fig. it. Thus thepipes :59 EXtGIIClLnQ' from the upper coupl1ngs29 -will not lie too close to the pipes extending downwardly from the couplings of the lower row. i
As hereinbeforepointedout, pipes 29 extend forwardly under the header 25. These pipes thus constitute hollow grate bars and the t'rontends of the pipes'ere attached to couplings 37 similar to the couplings'29 hereinbefore described. These couolingstl'l are connected to a header 38 supported in any suitable manner Within the front porplings 41. The upper ends otthe pipesO are disposed parallel with the overhanging portionsof .the sections 6 and thenextend upwardly andare attached to the upper portions of the sections by means of couplings Each of the sections 5 is provided with bute single pipe 43 this pipe, however, l ing similar to the pipes i0 and being Simi larly connected to their sections.
As hereinbefore stated, the particiilhr con struction of the coupling usedfbrsecuring' the pipes to the header is of'espeiell. impor- *until repaired.
tan'ce. Heretofore when nuts and bolts have been used for similar purposes, the nuts have soon burned ofi under the intense heat to which theyha-ve been subjected end the ports have thus become separated, thereby rendering the boiler unfit for further use It has been found that by using hollow nuts communicating with the interior of the header, the water admitted to the nuts Will prevent them from burning Then too, considerable heetirn surface is thus added to the boiler. Vvhat is claimed is 1'. In a boiler the conibi otion with e Weter containing element, of a-Weter conduet-' ing pipe, a coupling'member connected to{ one end of the pipe and discharging, at one end, into said element, afastening bolt extending from said member and through the Water containing element, andja hollow nut engaging said bolt and bearing against Water COHtzllIllDtI element, the outer end of the nut being closed and there being an extending from said member and into the 7 header, and a hollow water containing nut engaging the header. v
3. In a. boiler, the combinetien with 21 W2 ter containing element, of a hollow nut having an open end projecting into the said element, a, hollow coupling nieznber projectim into said element and having an open end discharging thercinto, a bolt connected at its ends to S2tlClII1filbF andto the nut, and a Water conducting pipe connected to the couplinp member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing us my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
