To all whom t may concern Be 1t known that I, ORvILLn S. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful lmprovements in ,Railway-Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in means for connecting the meeting ends of two railway rails, the primaryobject being to provide a simple, comparatively cheap and thoroughly effective device whereby the said rails will be effectively and securely connected.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, Y combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the 'following Aspecification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, l-l designate the ends of two abutting rails. rFliese rails are of the ordinary construction, and in the present instancethe said rails have their webs from their ends provided with longitudinally extending slots or openings 2 and their webs further provided with one or more bolt openings arranged at the rear of the slot. The joint includes a chair 3 which is provided with a horizontally straight base 4l, and one of the longitudinal edges of said base is formed with an inwardly extending angular flange 5 which terminates in a vertical longitudinally extending plate 6. The flange 5 is adapted to overlie and engage with the base flanges of the rails, when thersaid rails are arranged upon the chair, while the plate 6 engages within the fishing spaces of one of the sides of the rails. The plate 6, in the present instance, is centrally enlarged or thickened, as at 7. Formed upon the upper edge of the plate 6 and extending longitudinally therewith is a crest 8, the said crest being of a maximum thickness at the central portion of the chair, and having its outer face inclined in o iposite directions to the ends thereof. The vertical plate is provided with one or more bolt opening-'s 9 which are preferably arranged adjacent the outer ends thereof, and the longitudinal outer edge of the base provided with the rail engaging members, just described, is formed with bosses l0, whereby the vertically arranged openings 1l may be provided at the longitudinal edges of the rail base, so that spikes l?. passing through the said openings and into the ties i3, will. The, base l of the chair 3 is provided upon its opposite longitudinal edge with a rail engaging short side or iiange lll, the same including a vertical extension or plate. The short, flanged side member la is comparatively thick, and the opposite ends thereof are formed upon their inner faces with grooves or pockets 16 which correspond to the inner contour of the said iiange or side. The vertical member or plate of the side la below its rail head engaging edge is connected with the plate 6 by a longitu dinally extending web 17, the said web being of a length equaling the length of the inner face of the said vertical member or plate between the end grooves or depression 16. The longitudinal edge of the base l has suitable spike openings 18 which are preferably arranged adjacent the opposite corners of the said plate at the opposite ends ofV the short side or flange lll, and through which the spikes l2 pass.
The rails are moved upon the base 4c of the chair toward each other, so that the web 17 will be received within the slots 2 of the said rails and their bolt openings aline with the bolt openings in the plate 6. YWhen the rails are thus positioned,'angu lar side wedge members 19 and 2O respectively are arranged upon the nase at the opposite sides of the flange 14. Thesemembers 19 and 2O have their inner faces shaped to conform to the shape of the rails againstV adapted to register with the spike openings 18 in the base 4, and one end of each o ofthe said members 19 and 20is adapted to be forced into one of the oppositely disposed-grooves or pockets 16 formed upon the central member provided by the flange 14. It should here be stated that the ends of themembers 19 and 2O which engage with the longitudinal walls provided Vby the groove or pocket may be wedge-shaped as may also the said longitudinal walls of the pockets, so that the members 19 fand'. 20
Y will be forced into tight contact with the rails 11 when positionedupon the chair.` Bolts 23 are passed through Athe openings in the members19-20, ythe plate 6 andthe webs' of thev rails, nuts 24 engaging the said bolts-to retain the same uponthe joint.
YThe outer faces ofthe angular flange 5 and the flangedportions of the members 19 and- 20 may engage with one of the edges of the nuts as illustrated in the drawings, in
which instance the heads of the bolts must' i necessarily be-providedwith slots or grooves for the reception of driving means, and
this arrangement will effectively prevent 'i the nuts from working loose from the bolts.
