13e it known that I, EDWARD BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention relates to pumps which are double acting, and its object is to provide in a pump of this kind a novel and improved arrangement of valves and hollow plunger rods and also to provide a pump which is highly efficient in operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be made clear in the detailed description appearing hereinafter, and in' order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the pump, partly in section; Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged sections on the lines 2-2 and 33, respectively, of Fig. 1, and Figs. f1- and 5 are cross sections on the lines 4 1 and 55, respectively, of Fig. 3.
Referring specifically to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows the pump provided with two cylinders 1G, but this is immaterial as any number of cylinders may be employed. One of the cylinders is shown in section in Fig. 1, and as the construction of the cylinders and the parts operating thereinA is the same a description of one sufiices for both. The cylinders are mounted in a well 11, their lower ends being submerged in the water to be raised from the well. At the top of the well is an overlow pipe 12.
The pump cylinder 10 is composed of several sections suitably connected by bolting flanges 13. To the lower end of the cylinder is bolted or otherwise connected a valve ychamber 14 having a bottom inlet opening over which seats a valve 15 which opens to admit water to the chamber and closes to prevent the water from flowing back into the well. The valve has a depending guide stem 16 working in guides 17 carried by the bottom of the chamber. The upper end of the cylinder is enlarged and flared as indicated at 18. In the lower end of the cylinder 10 works a plunger 19 carried by a hollow rod 20. The plunger has a central opening which communicates with the interior of the rod, and said opening is provided with a valve 21 which is pivoted to swing upward to open position to admit Specification of Letters Patent. y

water from the chamber 14 into the rod. The plunger also has ports which establish communication between the chamber 11 and the space in the cylinder 10 above the plunger. rlhese ports are controlled by valves 23 which open upward.
1n operation, when the plunger 19 and the rod 2O are on the ups'trolre, the water in the cylinder 10 above the plunger is lifted and discharged, the valves 23 being held closed by the weight of the column of water above the same. The valve 15 opens on this stroke to admit water from the well 11 into the chamber 14. The water in the rod is not discharged on the upstrokc but is simply carried up with the rod, the valve 21 being held closed by the weight of the water above the same. On the downstroke, the valve 21 is forced open and more water enters the rod, resulting in the discharge of water from the upper end of the rod. At the same time, the valves 23 open to admit water into the cylinder from the chamber 111 through the ports 22. The valve 15 closes on the downstrolre.
The rod 2O is operatively connected at the upper end to a crank shaft 24@ driven from any suitable source of power. The upper end of the rod is open and the discharge of water takes place therefrom. 1n the enlarged upper end 18 of the cylinder 10 is a horizontal partition 25 having a central opening through which the rod passes. The partition slopes down from the center,
and above the partition, the part 18 of the cylinder has an outlet 26. Below the partition is a second outlet 27 to which the outlet 26 is connected outside the cylinder. The water discharged from* the rod 20 flows through the outlet 26, the discharge taking place above the partition`25, whereas the outlet 27 is for the water in the cylinder. The outlet 27 is connected to a pipe 28 which conducts the water to a place of use.
VThe cylinders 10 are supported in the well 11 by means of suspension rods 81 carried by a suitable frame work 35 and connected at their lower ends to rings 86 encircling the cylinders. The frame work is located at the top of the well and has crosstimbers 37 on which rest angle pieces 38 secured to the outside of the cylinders.
The rod 20 carries a number of air tight chambers 39 which are submerged in the lwater in the cylinder 10 when the pump is in action. By means of these chambers the power required to operate the pump is bet- Y ter distributed between the strokes.
