CALCULATING-MACHINE REGISTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND J. TILL- MAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating-Machine Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying. drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a register for calculating machines, and 1t has for its object the production of a register of this kind containing transfer mechanism operable when the register wheels are rotated in either one direction or the other direction, thereby rendering the register one by which either addition or multiplication calculations may be computed or substraction calculations may be computed, with the transfer action governable in the register.

Fig. VI is an enlarged perspective view of one of the pawls of the transfer mechanism. Fig. VII is an enlarged perspective view of one of the cams for operating the pawl carriers of the transfer mechanism, showing also a fragment of an adjacent transmission Wheel with which the operable.
My calculating machine register may be utilized in calculating machines of various said cams are coconstructions. As an example of a particular machine to which it is applicable I mention the calculating attachment for typewriting machines shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States (No. 1,003,671, granted to me September 19,1911.
Theregister in its preferred form comprises side frame members 1, which are mounted upon a suitable support A, along which the register may, if desired, be adjusted, as in the patent just mentioned. The side frames 1 of the register have mounted therein a horizontal numeral wheel supporting rod 2, which spans the space between said side frames.

the rod 2, the wheels being provided at their sides with gears 4. The numeral wheels 3 are operable by transmission wheels 6, arranged beneath the row of numeral wheels upon a horizontal rod 7 mounted in the end frames 1. These transmission wheels engage the gears fixed to the numeral wheels, and they are operable by a driving wheel 8 splined to and sliding upon a transmission shaft 9, which is driven by calculating mechanism of any suitable description; such, for example, as that shown and described in my patent hereinbefore mentioned, or that shown and described in U. S. patent for similar invention, No. 933,600, issued to me September 7, 1909. The driving wheel 8 is adapted to be shifted along the transiission shaft 9, so that it will become meshed with any of the transmission wheels 6.
The structural features of my register thus far described are all present in my previous patents, and no invention per se is herein claimed for them.
10 designates adjustable pawl carriers pivoted at their lower ends upon a rod 11 mounted in the end frames 1 and located between the transmission wheel supporting rod 7. These pawl carriers are provided with openings 12, through which the transmission shaft 7 extends, the openings being considerably larger than said shaft to permit of the pawl carriers being rocked forwardly and backwardly upon the pivot rod 11; and extending inwardly from the side walls of the opening are lugs 13 and 14, offset laterally from each other by being arranged in different vertical planes, and which receive the engagement of means for imparting forward and backward movement to the pawl carriers. Each pawl carrier is provided at its upper end with arms 15 and 16, to which pawls l7 and 18 are pivoted, the said arms being arranged, respectively, back of and in front of the numeral wheel supporting rod 2. The pawls l7 and 18 are movable into engagement with stop lugs 21 and 22 on the arms 15 and 16 of the pawl carrier to limit thedownward movement of the inner ends of the pawls, the arms of the pawls being normally held against said stop lugs by the pawl springs 22, (see Fig. VI).
The transmission wheels 6, geared as previously explained, to the numeral wheels 3 have conjoined to them cams 23 and 24, rotatable with the transmission wheels and movable circular paths within the openings 12 in the pawl carriers 10. The cams 23 are so disposed within the openings 12. in the pawl carriers as to engage the lugs 13 of said carriers when the transmission wheels 6 are rotated in one direction, and the pawl carrier is adjusted for such engagement. The cams 24 are olfset from the cams 23 and occupy such positions in the openings in the pawl carriers as to provide for said cams 24 engaging the lugs 14 when the transmission wheels are rotated in the opposite direction from that just previously mentioned, and the pawl carrier is properly adj usted to permit the engagement referred to.

These rock shafts have mounted thereon pull arms 27 and 28, which are opposite the several pawl carriers 10, and are connected to said pawl carriers by pull springs 29 and 30. This arrangement provides for the pawl carriers being drawn forwardly when the springs 30 are relaxed, and the springs 29 are placed under tension by movement of the pull arms 27; whereas, when the springs 29 are relaxed and the pull arms 28 are moved rearwardly, tension is placedin the springs 30 to cause rearward movement of the pawl carriers. Partial rotation of the rock shafts 25 and 26 to provide for the forward and backward movement of the pawl carriers is accomplished by adjusting members, to a description of which I will now proceed. The rock shaft 25 has fixed to it a crank arm 31, and the rock shaft 26 has fixed to it a crank arm 32. A link 33 is pivoted to the crank arm 31, and a link 34 is pivoted to the crank arm 32.
35 is an adjusting plate or member to which the links 33 and 34 are pivoted. This plate, most clearly shown in Fig. V, contains a hole 36, which permits of the plate being mounted upon the transmission wheel supporting rod 7. The adjusting plate 35 is rockable upon the shaft 7, and is provided with a slot 37, through which the numeral wheel supporting rod 2 extends, so that said supporting rod serves as a stop to limit the degree of rotation of the adjusting plate on the shaft 7.
The adjusting plate 35 may be operated by any suitable means to move its upper end forwardly or backwardly, so that it will place either the springs 29 or the springs 30 under tension and adjust the pawl carriers 10 correspondingly. I have shown in the drawings a shifting means comprising a toothed sector 39 which is pivoted to the shaft 11, and the teeth of which engage the teeth of the arms 38 of the adjusting plate 35. This sector is provided with a slotted arm 40, which receives a crank pin 41 carried by a setting shaft 42 extending through one of the side frames 1, the said shaft being provided with a knob 43. By turning the knob 43 in one direction,'the sector 39 is so moved as to throw the upper end-0f the adjusting plate'35 forwardly, and a reverse movement of said knob operates the sector to throw the upper end of said plate rear- 46 and 47 are detent rods mounted in the I adjusting plate 35, and through the medium of which the pawls 17 and 18, respectively, are withheld from engagement with the ratchet wheels 5 at the proper times, these rods being arranged longitudinally of the register and being secured also to an auxiliary-adjusting plate 35, complementary to the adjusting plate 35, located at the end of the register farthest from that at which the adjusting plate 35 is located. The auxiliary adjusting plate is connected by links 33 and 34 to crank arms 31 and 32 carried by the rock shafts 25 and 26, respectively.
48 designates one of a series of spring actuated controller dogs by which the transmission wheels 6 are caught at the comple tion of their movements to operate the numeral wheels 3, and detained in proper positions for succeeding operations.
Before proceeding to an explanation of the operation of the carrying or transferring mechanism of my register, I desire to state that the transmission wheels 6 shown in the drawings are provided with twenty teeth as compared with the ten teeth of the wheels 4 associated with the numeral wheels and engaged by the transmission wheels; and, in consequence of this, I employ the two cams 23' and two cams 24 with each transmission wheel to provide for two operations of the pawl carrier 10 in one complete rotation of each transmission wheel and it will be understood that if the transmission wheels were provided with ten teeth, only a single cam 23 and a single cam 24 would be utilized in conjunction with each transmission wheel.
In the practical use of my register, the operation is as follows: During the performance of calculations involving addition or multiplication, the pawl carriers 10 are adjusted into a forward or backward position, as the case may be, and adjusted into the opposite positions during the performance of calculations involving subtraction. This adjustment is accomplished through the medium of the adjusting plate 35, which, by acting upon the rock shafts 25 and 26, through the medium of the crank arms 31 and 32, places one series of the springs 29 or 30 under tension, while the other series of springs is relaxed. t will be understood that this adjustment provides for one series of the pawls 17 or 18 being so set by either the detent rod 46 or the detent rod 47, as to hold them out of engagement with ratchet wheels 5 associated with the numeral wheels, while the other series of pawls remains in engagement with said-ratchet wheels. Therefore,
when any particular transmission wheel is operated through the medium of the driving wheel 8, and acts to impart rotation to the corresponding numeral wheel, commensurate with the movement of the driving wheel, the proper cam 23 or 24 engages the lug 13 or 14 of the corresponding pawl carrier 10, and escapes from said lug at the completion of a ten unit movement of the transmission wheel and numeral wheel operated thereby. During the movement of the pawl carrier, the active pawl rides on the ratchet wheel 5 until it engages the next tooth of said wheel, and as the cam escapes from the lug mentioned, the tensioned spring 29 or 80, as the case may be, acts to move the pawl carrier in a direction the reverse of that in which it was moved by said cam. As a consequence, the active pawl moves forwardly and imparts a single step movement to the adjacent numeral wheel, either in a forward or backward direction, according to whether a second series of springs adapted to actuate said pawl carriers during the subtracting operations, a pair of rock shafts, pull arms carried by said rock shafts to which said springs are connected, and an adjusting member for rotating said rock shafts.

A register of the character described comprising register wheels, and combined adding and subtracting transfer mechanism cooper-able with said register wheels, said combined adding and subtracting transfer mechanism comprising a series of rockable pawl carriers provided with a series of adding pawls and a series of subtracting pawls, a series of springs adapted to actuate said pawl carriers during the adding operations, a second series of springs adapted to actuate said pawl carriers during the subtracting operations, a pair of rock shafts, pull arms carried by said rock shafts to which said springs are connected, links connected to said rock shaft, and a rockable adjusting plate connected to said links.

A register of the character described comprising register wheels, and combined adding and subtracting transfer mechanism cooperable with said register wheels, said combined adding and subtracting transfer mechanism comprising a series of rockable pawl carriers provided with a series of adding pawls and a series of subtracting pawls, a series of springs adapted to actuate said pawl carriers during the adding operations, a second series of springs adapted to actuate said pawl carriers during the subtracting operations, an adjusting member for placing either of said series of springs under tension, and means carried by said adjusting member for holding said pawls selectively in inoperative positions.
