Description

R. DU TAILLY.
SASH FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 4, 191a.
Patented Mar. 7, 1916.
wuewto aa (lu u II I ROZARIO DU TAILLY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RozARIo DU TAILLY,
a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and'State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in sash fasteners, and particularly that class which embodies means whereby two sashes may be locked in eithera closed or a partially open position when it is desired to ventilate the room, and furthermore, to provide a device of this character which, when in locked position, will not de-; pend upon the securing elements for retaining the sashes locked.
With the above objects in view, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the improved lock securing two sashes in a closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar view but illustrating the sashes partially opened, Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the sashes and through the lock, Fig. 4: is a similar view but illustrating the catch swung to an unlocking position, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the sleeve or socket members which is secured within the upper sash, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of a socket member which may be employed.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates the upper sash of a window, and 2 the lower sash thereof. The vertical stile 3 of the upper sash 1 is provided at suitable spaced intervals with rounded depressions 4 which enter at the outer face of the said stile. The depressions are of a size to snugly receive sleeves or socket members 5, each of said socket members having its outer and open face formed with a rounded flange 6 which is adapted to tightly engage with the outer face of the stile 1,and if desired,the flange 6 maybe provided with perforations for the receptlon of securing elements,butinpractice, it has been found further that the sockets 5 engage the wall of the depression a with sufficient friction Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 4, 1913. Serial No. 758,858.
to retain the said socket within the depresslon. 1n the preferred form of the socket,
the same. has its lower portion provided with a slot 7, the purpose of which will presently be set forth. Y
Secured to the upper bar or rail 8 of the lower sash 2 is a catch member 9. The'catch includes a substantially rectangular base 10 having its corners provided with openings for the reception of securing elements, and the said base is provided adjacent its rear edge and at an equal distance from its center with upstanding lugs 11 between which the elongated arm 12 of the catch proper is pivoted, as at 13. The lower edge of the catch is flat and is adapted to be engaged by a flat spring 14 which has its bowed portion arranged between the lugs 11 and which is secured to the front portion of the base 10, as at 15. The arm ofthe member 12 of the catch has its upper extremity formed with an angular face 16 which, when the catch is thrown to locked position, is received within one of the sockets 5 and which has the lower portion of its bill received within the openings 7 in the bottom wall of the said socket. The juncture of the bill 16 and the arm 12 is rounded or concaved, as at 17, to correspond with the rounded surface at the juncture of the socket and its flange 6, the said rounded portion 17 snugly engaging with the said rounded portion of the sleeve, and it will be noted that should an attempt be made to raise the upper sash 1, these portions of the catch and socket will tightly contact, and such an attempt will only serve to slightly raise the outer portion or extremity of the bill 16 from out of the opening 7 of the socket 5. The said bill 16 is provided with a convexed upper edge 16 and the said edge abutting firmly with one of the walls of the socket member 5 at a point diametrically opposite to the point of contact of the concaved portion 17 with said socket and by such arrangement afiects a binding locking action of the lower sash 2 with respect to the upper sash 1. Should the upper sash be given a downward movement, the upper face of the bill 16 will be contacted, and the arm 12 will be forced tightly against its pivot. It will be noted that as the catch has its bill arranged within the socket, it is absolutely necessary that the base 10 of the catch be secured to the top bar 8 of the sash 2, as the base 10 thereof will prevent a downward movement of the sash 1, and the bill 16 will prevent an upward movement of the sash 2. It will also be apparent that the catch cannot be unlocked from the exterior of the room. To facilitate the operation of the catch 9, I have provided the arm 12, directly to the rear of its bill 16, with a finger-hold 18.
From the above description, taken'in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof, will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain Without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
socket, said catch including an arm having Copies of this patentmay be obtained for five cents eaehg by addressing the Commissioner of Patents;
in presence of two witnesses;
diametrically opposed points thereof, there-- by disposing and retaining the terminal of the bill within the slot of the socket for effecting'a permanent locking action of the catch, and a manipulating portion formed Y integral with and disposed directly in rear ofesaid bill. v 7 V r 1 In testimony whereof Iaflixi my signature 1 7 ROZA RIO, DU TAILLY.
