To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ARNOLD VVIRZ, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Buii'alo, in the county of Erie and State of N ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Facing-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a facing bar or tool designed more particularly for use in drill presses and the like, and belongs to that class which comprises a tool-bar or shank provided with grooves for the reception of the cutters.
The object of my invention is to produce a tool of this character which consists of few parts, is easy to manufacture and at the same time strong and durable in construcj tion.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side elevationl of the improved tool. Fig. 2 is a. bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, with the tool bar partly broken away to show a cutter seated in its groove. Fig. il is a transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the outer sleeve of the facing tool. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the tubular head or inner sleeve. Fig. 7 is a similar view of one of the cutters. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of a modified construction of the tool. Fig. 9 is a transverse section on line 9 9, Fig. 8.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the preferred construction shown in Figs. l7, the facing tool has the usual tool bar or shank l of tempered steel, provided in vopposite sides thereof with a suitable number of comparatively shallow longitudinal grooves or seats 2, each adapted to receive the inner edge of a cutter. Four of such grooves are shown in the drawings but a different number may be employed, if desired, and for the sakel of clearness two of the cutters are omitted in Figs. 1 7. Each of these cutters is preferably lL-shaped, having an upwardly-tapering shank 3 and a cutting member or blade i projecting radially from the shank. The upper and lower edges of the cutter-Shanks arev preferably rounded to conform to the correspondinglyshaped ends of the grooves 2.

6, which sleeves are concentric and cooperate with each other in holding the cutters rigidly in place. The inner sleeve 5 has a cylindrical bore 7 which receives the tool bar l, and longitudinal slots 8 extending from the bottom of said sleeve upwardly to a distance short of the top thereof, said slots receiving the shanks 3 of the cutters. At the bottom of this inner sleeve is an annular groove or seat 9 for the reception of the flange 10 projecting from the base of the outer sleeve 6. In the construction shown, this seat is formed by a fiange ll projecting from the base of the inner sleeve and having an upturned rim 12. In its lower edge, the outer sleeve is provided with radial grooves v13 which register with the slots 8 of the inner sleeve or head 5, and receive the upper portions ofthe cutting blades t.
The contiguous surfaces of the two sleeves j have a unifo-rm upward taper.
As shown in the drawings, the blades of the ,cutters project a suitable distance below the bottom of the inner sleeve.
'In assembling the tool, the shanks ofthe cutters are placed in their respective grooves 2, and the inner sleeve or head 5 is slipped over the tool bar and the cutter-Shanks, after which the outer sleeve 6 is placed over said inner one and driven tightly thereon. The radial grooves 18 are of sufficient depth to permit the outer sleeve`6 to be tightened without restraint by contact with the cutterblades. In this manner, the cutters are wedged in place by the outer sleeve, which engages the tapered edges of their shanks, holding the cutters rigidly in position. vAt the samev time, the cutter-Shanks 3 and blades 4 are-firmly supported at both sides by the walls of the slots 8 and the grooves 13.v The inner sleeve containing these slots isl in turn reinforced by the surrounding sleeve 6, producing a very strong and reliable construction.
By making the longitudinal grooves 2 rather shallow, a relatively large number of them may be employed without unduly weakening the tool bar l, and a corresponding number of slots and grooves may without danger of breakage be formed in the inner sleeve 5 and outer sleeve 6, respectively, the greatest strain being exerted at the lower end of the tool adjacent to the flange 10 and the rim 12, where the parts are strongest and capable of resisting such strains.

In the modified construction shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the tool-bar l is provided with longitudinal grooves 2 adapted to receive the cutter-shanks, as in the previously described construction. These shanks are confined in the grooves. by means of a holder consisting of a single sleeve 14 which surrounds the tool bar and is provided in its bore with longitudinal grooves 15 which receive the cutter shanks, respectively, and diminish in depth toward the top of the sleeve, so that upon driving the sleeve downwardly on the tapering cutter-shanks, they are tightly clamped in said grooves. In its lower edge, the sleeve has-radial grooves 16 which receive the upper portions of the cutting blades, as in the embodiment previously described.
As shown in the drawings, the grooves 2 of the tool-bar are closed at their ends, their upper ends forming stops or shoulders which receive the thrust of the cutters, while their lower ends hold the cutters from displacement in assembling them on the bar.
The tool, being composed of few parts, can be quickly assembled and cheaply manufactured, while its great strength permits the use of a comparatively large number of cutters 'without danger of breaking the toolbar or holding sleeve or sleeves.
l". claim as my invention:
l. A tool of the character described, comprising a tool bar having a longitudinal groove closed at its upper end and forming a stop, a cutter having a tapering longitudinal shank seated in said groove and abutting against said stop and a blade projecting radially from said shank, and a clamping sleeve surrounding and engaging said shank and provided in its lower edge with a radial groove which receives said cutterblade, said sleeve having a tapering bore corresponding to the taper of the cuttershank.
2. A- facing tool, comprising a tool ba-r having longitudinal grooves, cutters having shanks seated in said grooves, an inner sleeve surrounding the tool bar and having longitudinal slots which receive said cuttershanks, and an outer sleeve applied to said inner sleeve for retaining the cutters in said grooves and slots.
3. A facing tool, comprising a tool bar having longitudinal grooves, cuttersl having shanks seated in said grooves, and blades projecting radiallyr from said Shanks, an inner sleeve surrounding said` tool bar and having longitudinal slots which receive said cutter-Shanks and an outer sleeve surrounding the inner sleeve and provided in its lower portion with radial grooves which re-,3 ceive said cutter-blades.
4. A facing tool, comprising a tool bark having longitudinal grooves, cutters having shanks seated in said grooves, and blades projecting radially from said Shanks, an inner sleeve surrounding said tool-bar and having longitudinal slots which receive said cutter-shanks, said slots extending upwardly from the base of the sleeve and termina ting short of its upper end and an outer clamping sleeve surrounding said inner sleeve and engaging said cutter-shanks.
A facing tool, comprising a tool bar having longitudinal grooves, cutters having shanks seated in said grooves, an inner sleeve having longitudinal slots which receive said shanks and a projecting base flange provided with an upturned rim, said flange and rim having slots coinciding with said longitudinal slots, and an outer clamping sleeve surrounding said inner sleeve and seated between the saine and said rim.

A facing tool, comprising a tool-bar having longitudinal grooves, cutters having shanks seated in said grooves and blades projecting radially from said shanks, an; inner sleeve having longitudinal slots which` receive said shanks and a projecting baseflange provided with an upturned rim, said flangev and rim having slots coinciding with said longitudinal slots and receiving the radial blades of the cutters, and an outer clamping sleeve surrounding said inner sleeve and provided with a base flange seated between the inner sleeve and said rim and having radial grooves which receive said cutter-blades. j
7. A facing tool, comprising a tool bar provided indifferent sides with longitudinal grooves, L-shaped cutters having radial blades and tapering longitudinal shanks arranged in said grooves, a tapering inner sleeve surrounding said tool bar and provided on the outer side of its base with an annular seatv and having longitudinal slots arranged to receive the shanksof said cutters, and an outer sleeve surrounding said inner sleeve and tapered to conform to said shanks for wedging the cutters in place, said outer sleeve having a flanged base arranged in said seat and provided in its lowerl edge with radial grooves which receive the blades of said cutters.
