TRAFFIC-STAND.
Specification of Letters IE'atent.
Patented Mar. 7, 1916.
Application filed. July 7, 1915. Serial No. 38,611.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREEBORN COGGESHALL, a citizen of the'United States of America, and resident of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traffic-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stands which are especially adapted for use by policemen or traffic officers at the intersection of streets where they have to be stationed for directing traflic, the said invention being designed as a protection for the said traflic oflicers.
It is the purpose of the inventor to shield the occupant of the stand from sun during the heated terms of the year or from rain and cold winds, the said invention afiording free movement of the body so' that the ofiicer may turn for the purpose of giving signals in directing traffic.
A further object of this invention is to provide a shield as a guard against rain or cold winds, said guard having means for its at" .chment or removal from the permanent structure of the stand, the said stand being furthermore provided with means for removably holding an umbrella or canopy.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a View in perspective showing a stand embodying the invention, a part being broken awav Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view transversely of the stand with the mat omitted; Fig. 3 illustrates a detail view of the base of the stand and the floor thereof showing a device for fastening the lower end of the shield or closure; an Fig. 4-. illustrates a plan view of a fragment of the closure showing the fastener thereof adapted to cooperate with the fastener on the base.
In these drawings 5 denotes the base sills or frame, 6 a floor thereon, said floor being made up of sections having spaced relation to one another to afford drainage therethrough and 7 a mat, preferably of rubber located on the floor on which the occupant may stand.
There isa series of sockets 8 with flanges 9 secured to the floor in any appropriate vmanner as bythe fastenings 10 andv these sockets engage and retain the lower ends of the posts 11, 12 and 13, the latter of which has an inwardly extending angular portion 14: intermediate its length. The upper ends of the posts 11 and 12 have fittings 15 and the upper end of the post 13 has a fitting 16 by which a curved rall 17 is secured to the said posts, the said posts and rail constituting a frame-like structure for the support of a shield or curtain 18, preferably of flexible fabric, which is held by the posts and rail at its upper portion and by fastenings at its lower portion to form ahousing for the protection heretofore mentioned. I prefer that the said shield or curtain shall be provided with attachments, such as straps 19 encircling the portions of the frame as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, whereas the lower end of the curtain has reinforcing plates 20 provided with apertures 21 to receive the latches22, located preferably on the edges of the floor so that the shield may be so held asto prevent wind from passing over the floor of the stand. The frame 5 is polygonal and wind cannot pass to the interior'of the frame under the floor so that when the shield is in place, the occupant of the stand is well guarded or protected.
The socket 523 is anchored to the floor and constitutes a holder for the umbrella or canopy stick 24 and thesaid socket 23 may have a binding screw or pin 25 therein to prevent the umbrella stick from leaving traflic which is approaching from the sidesv I. I
or rear.
I claim 1. In a traflic stand, a base, a floor thereon, sockets secured to the floor, posts in the sockets, a curved rail, means for securingthe curved rail to the posts, a shield comprising a flexible fabrlc, means for securing the shield to the posts and rail,-
drawing, the stand is prosupport in said lower end, devices on the floor extending through the apertured plates for holding the shield in place, a socket anchored to the plate, a canopy support in said socket,
a mirror, and means secured to the rail for support ng the mirror.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
