IIVIPR'OVEMEN'I IN BUTTER-WORKERS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,428, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, LUKE L. KELLOGG, of Leon, in the county of Oat-taraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Butter-Worker 5 and I- do hereby declare the following -to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing making a part of this speciiication, in wl1ich Figure l is a sectional elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
This invention relates to the combination of a vibratory sector-shaped tray for receiving butter as it comes from the churn with a corrugated roller of conical shape, placed in stationary boxes, for working77 such butter, as the trayis vibrated beneath the roller.
Referrin g to the drawing, a is the sectorshaped tray, placed in an inclined position in order that the buttermilk and water expressed from the butter may run ott' at the lower end. The tray is secured to a kind of derrick, composed of a swinging arm, b c d, pivoted upon a vertical shaft, e, mounted in the frame A. This arrangement not only admits of the vibration of the tray, but also prevents its upper end from sagging. A further preventive against sagging is the roller j', mounted on the standard g beneath the outer end of the tray. The corrugated roller is shown at h, its journals entering a bar, 1'., at the lower end of the tray, and a boX placed within a recess in the standard g. A crank, j., is secured to the upper journal of the roller. A handle, m., is attached to the outside of the tray, near its upper end, to assist in vibrating it. The roller is made conical in order that its corrugations may be deepest at its upper end, where it has to pass over the greatest quantity of butter. A screw, a, passing through the head ofthe standard g, enters the box that supports the journal of the roller, for the purpose ot' effecting the raising or lowering of said box according to the quantity of but-ter in the tray.
The method of operation is to turn the crank with one hand, and with the other to move the tray as may be necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the vibratory tray a and corrugated roller 7c, moinlted in stationary boxes, as specified.
2. The combination of the tray a, supportingframe b c d, shaft e, roller j', and frame A, as described.
