KARL J OI-IANSON, OF SAGAMOBE, PENNSYLVANIA, .ASSIGNO'R OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD JOI-I NSQNQ OF SAGAMORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
METAL-CUTTING siIEARs.
Application filed November 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL JoHANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sagamore, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal- Cutting Shears, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in shears for cutting sheet-metal and is distinguished by being simple in construction and having its parts interchangeable and adjustable so that if one or both of the blades become dull or broken, they may instantly be replaced by spare ones. The upper blade may also be adjusted relatively to the lower blade, thus providing difierent angularity and gap between them. Lastly, the two shanks may be shifted in and out in order to obtain dilferent leverage.
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows the shears in perspective view; Fig. 2 a part of the upper shank in perspective view and seen from the back of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a side elevation in larger scale; Fig. 4 a top plan view of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a section along line VV of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 a section along line VIVI of Fig. 3, and, Fig. 7 a section along line VIIVII of Fig. 3.
The two shanks 10, 11 are spread apart in the usual manner by a compression spring 12. The forward extension 13 of the upper shank 10 is recessed as at 14: in order to accommodate the upwardly-extending arm 14: of the lower blade 15 which thus becomes firmly fixed in the upper shank with the as In case of injury to this blade, it may consequently be easily and quickly replaced by another one by merely unscrewing the nut and taking out the bolt 15.
The upper shank is provided with a short extension 13' beyond the recessed portion 13, with several holes 21 for accommodating the journal pin 19 and the lower shank 11 has a similar but longer extension 11, with Specification of Letters Patent.

several holes 21 for the journal pin 19 which also engages in one of the holes 20 provided in the hinge straps or links 17 held in place by a nut threaded on the end of the ournal pin 19.
The upper blade 16 is suspended by means of the hinge straps 17, 23. The rear end of the blade 16 has several holes 18 to accommodate the bolt 18 which forms the journal for the blade and also runs through the lower end of the link 17 and through the arm 14. of the lower blade 15.
The forward hinge straps 23 of which there are a pair are journaled at the end of the extension 11 by means of a bolt 22 and another bolt 24 connects the straps 23 to the upper blade 16.
By shifting the bolts 18, 19 from one set to another of the holes 18, 20, 21 and 21, the adjustment of the blades and of the shanks is accomplished.
I claim:
1. In two-bladed shears, a shank having a recessed portion for receiving and rigidly holding one of the blades, an extension beyond said recessed portion on which the second shank is journaled, link connection between said extension and the rear end of the second blade, said connection being adjustable; said second shank extending forward of its journal point, and another link connection between the forward ends of the second blade and the second shank.
2. In two-bladed shears, a shank having a recessed portion for receiving and rigidly holding one of the blades, an extension beyond said recessed portion on which the second shank is journaled, link connection between said extension and the rear end of the second blade, said connection being adjustable; said second shank extending forward of its journal point, another link connection between the forward ends of the second blade and the second shank, and means for adjusting the position of said second blade.
V 3. In two-bladed shears, a shank having a recessed portion for receiving and rigidly holding one of the blades, an extension benection between the forward ends of the yond said recessed portion .on which the second blade and the second shank, and second shank is journaled, link connection means for adjusting the position of said 10 between said extension and the rearend of second shank.
