ATTACHMENT FOR THE PROMOTION EASE AND SPEED IN WRITING.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, MATTHEW A. RAFT- ERY and OSCAR FREY, citizens of the United States, and residents of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for the Promotion of Ease and Speed in Writing, of which the following is one or more of the fingersv thereof, with the writing material.

Our invention resides in a device to be fastened usually to one of the fingers of the writer, consisting in combination, of attaching and resting means, and a ball hearing or polished sphere or smooth piece of metal or other material, which comes in contact with the writing material.

Referring to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the different views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device in position; Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view of our invention; and Figs. 4 and 5 are modifications of the same. In this illustration our device is attached to the fourth or small finger of the hand, although in some cases, depending upon individual needs, the user may prefer to use it on the second or third finger. In this figure the third finger is resting upon the flange 5. It will be evidentthat as the writer proceeds with his work the part 4 will be the only portion of the device coming in contact with the writing material, the ball bearing being thus caused to revolve quickly with the movement of the hand, or the polished sphere, or piece of metal, to glide swiftly over the said material. Our invention therefore compels the adoption of the proper hand and arm movement needful for speedy and easy writing. It also does away with the friction arising from contact of thefingers with the paper, especially where the fingers are slightly moist from perspiration. I

On the side of the device which is lengthened in part to form this extension is placed the flange or rest 5 for another finger. This rest imparts added steadiness to the device in use although not altogether necessary, and it to our improvement, or the same made adjustable to suitindividual requirements. It is also evident that While we have described our invention as intended for users of pen or pencil, it could also be attached to the tools and implements of other trades and arts Where lightness and freedom of movement are essential. Our invention will be found of great help to stenographersrin speedy reporting and to students and users .of the Palmer method of Writing.

What We claim a's'new and desire to'se cure by Letters Patent, is:

1. An attachment for promoting speedl in Writing comprising supporting means for the hand adapted to be attached to one of the fingers, andprovided with a support for the-next adjacent finger, saidsu-pporting means contacting With the Writing surface when in use.

2. -A device of the character described provided With a member adapted to encircle the finger, a member projecting outward therefrom and adapted to act as a support for the I next adjacent finger, means contacting with 45 the writing surface when in use, said means being arranged opposite the projecting member.

3. A device of the character describedprovided with parallel bands adapted toencircle one of the fingers, a memberconnecting said bands, a member projecting outward therefrom adapted to engage with the next adjacent'finger, said member being in a plane substantially horizontal to said connecting member, and means contacting with the writing surface when the device is in use.

4. A device of the character described provided with parallel bands adapted to encircle one of the fingers, a member connect- 0 ing said bands, a member projecting out- Ward therefrom adapted to engage with the next adjacent finger, said member being in in a plane substantially horizontal to said connecting member, and means mounted on one of said parallel bands opposite the said projecting member, said means contacting with the writingsurface When the-device'is' in use.

5. A device of the character described pro vided with parallel bands adaptedv to encircle one of the-fingers, a member connecting said bands, 21- member projecting outward therefrom adapted to engage with the next adjacent finger, said member being. in '75 a plane substantiallyhorizontal to said connecting member, and a ballbearing mount ed onone of said parallelbands opposite the said projecting member, said ballbearing contacting with the Writing; surface 0 when the device is in use."
