Description
UNITED STATES PATENT GFF-ICE.
EDWARD D. SWARTWOUT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUTOMATIC FANS.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. SwARTWoUT, of Chicago, n the State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements Combining a Fan or Aire A gitator with a Bedstead, of which the following is a specification:
The nature ofmyinvention consists in combining afan with a bedstead, arranged in such a manner that the fan shall be caused to revolve or vibrate by means of clockwork and agitate the air immediately over the bed, substantially as is hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fan and bedstead.
The bedstead may be of anyT known construction, the head-board A and the foot-board A2 being a support, and from which is suspended the shaft B7 and in ease either the head-board or the foot-board is not of sufficient height, uprights M may be used as a support to the shaft B above the head-board or the foot-board, as sh own in the drawing. One end of the shaft B is pivoted at a to the headboard A, and the other end is pv' oted to the footAboard A2 or to its upright M, as shown. The shaft B is provided with cross-arms 2 near each of its ends, and there may be more or less arms, and there may be, or may not be, arms at the center of the shaft. To the arms 2 2 I secure the blowers or air-agitators K. I prefer to use for the blowers a thin close-woven cloth, but any proper material may be used, and may be attachedgto the arms 2 in any proper manner. Near one end of the shaft B I secure a cog-wheel, E, which is geared into a cog-wheel of the clockwork W. The clock-work W may be .any common clock, or a train of more or lesswheels driven by a spring or a weight, and the clock-Work is so. arranged and situated that one of its wheels, or an auxiliary wheel, shall mesh or gear into the cog-wheel E.
ln operation the clock-WorlrW imparts motion to the shaft B, causing it to revolve, carrying round the blowers K, agitating the air immediately over the bed. The shaft B may be caused to revolve at any desired speed by the proper adjustment and size of the Wheels in the clockwork and of the Wheel E, producing a slow motion to agitate the air, or a fast motion to fan persons lying on the bed.
Mosquito-bars and curtains may be used around and over the bedstead, and the air over the bed is kept constantly in motion from evening until morning.
I claim- In combination with a bedstead, the bearingshaft B, supported at the head and the foot of the bedstead, and to which is attached blowers K, constructed and arranged to operate with the clock-work, substantially as shown, whereby the blowers are caused to revolve or to vibrate and agita-te the air immediately over the bed, all constructed and arranged relatively to each other, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD D. SWARTVVOUT.
