Description

UNITED STATES FRANCIS WV. ROBINSON, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,333, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. RoBINsoN, of the city of Richmond, county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Universal Safety-Couplings, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to casting the hubs of a universal coupling in two parts, furnishing each part of the hub with an ear and pin, (which are cast solid onto said piece or half of hub,) and binding the halves of the hub together by shrinking a wrought-iron band around both, which holds them firmly together. The object of my invention is to furnish a universal safety-coupling free from all bolts or pins, and not liable to catch in the clothes of the operatives; and to produce an article not likely to get out of order, and that can be afforded to the public at a cheaper rate than many of the couplings in use.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my universal safety-coupling with the ring standing on its periphery. Fig. 2 is the ring lying on its side. Fig. 3 shows theinside of one-half of one of the hubs. Fig. 4 presents the outside of one-half of one of the hubs with one-half of the band on it.
The same letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
A is my universal safety-coupling. B is the ring; C,the half of the hub; D,the band around the halves of hub. E E are pins cast solid on. the ears G and inserted in the holes F. F F
are holes or recesses to receive the pins E. G G are ears cast solid to the hub N K, square hole into which the end of a shaft is to be inserted and formed by putting the halves of the hub (as seen at Figs. 3 and 4.) together, each halfhaving half the hole cast in it. N is the hub.
A safetycoupling may be made to be put together in halves, and be jointed to the ring by casting pins or projections on the inside of the ring B, while the ears G, being provided with holes, will be equivalent to what I have already described. a
I do' not claim a universal coupling, as I am aware they have long been in use. Nor do I claim a coupling provided with ears and pins cast on them, when the hub is cast in one piece, and the ring made in halves and bolted together. I disclaim all bolts and pins except those described.
What I claim as my invention is Constructing a safety-coupling with the hub in halves, so that the pins E E may be inserted in the holes F F from the inside of the ring B, thereby having a smooth surface at the periphery, the whole being constructed as above described, and for the purposes specified.
' F. W. ROBINSON.
