BURIAL-RECEPTAGLE.
- Application filed July 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs SHARMAN, of the city of Stratford, in the county of Perth, Province of Ontario, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of burial receptacles for the purpose of adapting them to be hermetically sealed, and my object'is to devise a construction for this purpose equally applicable to caskets and to the outer shells commonly known as vaults.
I attain my object by means of the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of part of a casket constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 a cross section of a modification of the joint; Fig. 3 a cross section of another modification of the joint; and Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 1 showing my construction embodied in a vault.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 1, it will be seen that the receptacle comprises two parts 1 and 2. In Fig. 1, 1 is the lid of a casket and in Fig. 4: the bottom of a vault. The part 1, it will be noted, has its edges folded and bent to form a groove, one side of the groove being formed by the doubled part 3 and the other by the single part 4:. The part 2, as shown in Fig. 4-, is folded to form the doubled edge 5 adapted to fit in the groove between the sides 3 and l. In this groove plastic sealing material is poured or placed, and a water and airtight joint thus obtained. Preferably the doubled over edge of the part 2 is bent again parallel to the part 5, as shown at 6 in Fig. 4:, to form a groove. Each part of the receptacle is thus provided with a groove, one side of which is double and the other single, the doubled side of one and the single side of the other fitting into the re spective grooves, in both of which plastic sealing material may be placed if desired. This construction may be readily used for Specification of Letters Patent.

either a casket or a vault, the part 1 being uppermost in the one construction and lowermost in the other. In either position one of the grooves has its bottom lowermost so that it will hold a sealing material sufficiently fluid when hot to flow readily.
' In Fig. 2 the groove on the part 2 is shown formed by the separate piece 7 brazed or otherwise secured to the edges of the part 2. This part 7 may be Z-shaped in section as shown, thus forming a part 8 giving a finish to the outer edges of the part 2 and providing a flange against which the doubled side 3 of the part 1 may rest.
Fig. 3 shows a joint similar to the construction shown in Fig. 1.
After the parts are placed together and sealed, they may be secured together by means of bolts 9 passed through the parts as shown and engaged with nuts 10, which are preferably soldered or brazed in position so that the bolts may be used with their heads outside.
By means of the constructions described, vaults or caskets may be readily made capable of being hermetically sealed against the intrusion of air and water.
