Description

A. J. KLUNK.
CAMPERS STOVE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-H. 1914.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed August 17, 1914. Serial no. 857,034.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT J. KLUNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange. in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented a new and useful Campers Stove, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a collapsible stove, and the main object of the invention is to provide a stove which is a single unit, that is, has no separable parts, and which may be folded up into a perfectly flat thin package or may be extended out quickly into expanded position for use. The stove includes a chimney which is formed as a part of the unit and which folds flat with the rest of the stove.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a view of the under sideof the stove showing it folded; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top of the stove showing it folded; Fig. 3 is aside elevation showing the stove folded; Fig. f is a perspective view showing the stove extended for use; Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the stove.
The stove body comprises a top plate 1 with two side plates 2, each of which is hin ed at 3 to the plate 1 and a back plate 4 which is hinged at 5 to the plate 1. The back plate has flanges 6 which project over the side plates 2 and act to steady the side plates 2 and also close the corner preventing a gap.
7 designates the chimney which is shown rectangular in cross section and which consists of side plates 8 and front and rear plates 9 which are hinged together at 10. The front plate 9 of the chimney is hinged at 11 to the top plate 1, and the top plate 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, is provided with an opening 12 to communicate with the chimney when the latter is erected and is provided with a flange 13 which projects up slightly from the plate 1 and fits within the bottom of the chimney holding the chimney in expanded position and squarely over the aperture 12 also acting to shut the crack at that point and weaken the draft.
The manner in which the hinge connections have.been formed is very essential since it is necessary that no cracks be left in the structure when set up, and since it is desirable to have the structure fold into a very flat form when collapsed. The hinge construction provided fulfils both of theserequirements. The hinge knuckles or sleeves which encircle the hinge pins are integral parts of the walls of the stove and chimney. In reality each wall is a hinge leaf. The knuckles are formed by notching the edges of the walls and bending the portions between the notches to form sleeves, and the sleeves of the joined walls are alternately arranged along the line of juncture so'that they will interlock and form with the hinge pin a hinge.
The back plate l has a socket 14, and a bolt 15 is slidable in sockets 16 on the chimney 7 and when the chimney is extended as shown in Figs. 4: and 5, the bolt 15 is projected down to engage the socket l4 and thereby lock the chimney firmly in erect position. A pin 17 on the bolt prevents it from being pressed too far down.
To collapse the stove the bolt 15 is slipped up, the chimney is then swung over to free it from the flange 13 and then it is pressed flat as shown in Fig. 2 and laid flatly against the plate 1, then the side plates 2 are folded in flat against the underside of the plate 1 and then the back plate 4 is folded in against the side plates 2 as shown in Fig. 1. The stove is now in a perfectly flat position and in a very convenient condition for carrying in an automobile or pack. Being a unit it is impossible to lose any of the parts.
Considering the entire structure a unit, the stove body and the chimney might well be considered as sub units which when connected as illustrated by the hinge 11 form one unitary structure having no loose parts to become lost or detached. This is highly essential in'a campers stove, because such stoves must often be set up and folded in the dark and must be transported without much care being exercised in the packing thereof. The rough treatment accorded a collapsible portable stove of this nature renders it equally essential that they collapse flatly and leave no projecting parts to be bent, broken or otherwise injured. The chimney 9 collapses into a fiat form and folds flatly against the top of the stove body, which in turn collapses into a very compact flat form. If the walls were connected by ordinary leaf hinges, it would not be possible to collapse them so that they would lie flatly against one another, .be causeof the space required by the hinge leaves and knuckles; This is obviated edges to the top plate, a back plate hinged at its upper edge to the back edge of the top plate, a chimney comprising a plurality of plates hinged together, one of said plates being hinged at the bottom to said topplate, said top plate having an aperture to communicate with said chimney, a bolt slidable on one of the plates of said chimney, and a socket on the back plate adapted to receive the end of said bolt'to lock the chimney in erect position.
2. A collapsible stove comprising a top plate having side plates and an end plate secured thereto, all foldable thereon to a flat form and a collapsible chimney pivoted to said top plate and both foldable and collapsible thereon to a fiat form.
3. In an article of the character described, the combination with a top plate of a stove, of a smoke pipe collapsible to flat form and pivoted to said top plate, said stove pipe comprising a plurality of side plates all permanently hinged together longitudinally thereof, said pipe being foldable upon said stove and collapsible without detachment of the pipe from the stove and without detachment of any of the pipe sections from each other.
4. In an article of the character described, the combination with a top plate of a stove, of a smoke pipe collapsible to flat'form and pivoted to said top plate, said stove comprising a plurality of side plates all permanently hinged together longitudinally thereof, said pipe being foldable upon said stove and collapsible without detachment of the pipe from the stove and without detachment of any of the pipe sections from each other and means for locking said pipe in upright position.
v 5. In an article of the character described,
the combination with a top plate of a stove, of a smoke pipe collapsible to flat form and pivoted to said top plate, said stove. pipe comprising a plurality of side plates all permanently hinged together longitudinally thereof, said pipe being foldable upon said stove and collapsible without detachment of the pipe from the stove and without detachment of any of the pipe sections from each other and means for locking said pipe in expanded and upright position.
6. A collapsible stove comprising a top plate, two side plates hinged thereto and foldable inwardly thereon to flat form, an end plate hinged to said top plate and foldable inwardly thereonto flat form, a smoke pipe pivoted to said top plate and foldable thereon, said pipe comprising a plurality of sides all permanently hinged together and being collapsible to flat form when folded upon said top plate, without detachment of same plane with one another, a locking member carried by the chimney, and a cooperating locking member carried by the stove body to lock the chimney in extended position.
8. A camp stove comprising a top plate, side plates hinged along their upper edges to the side edges of the top plate, a back plate hinged at its upper edge to one end edge of the top plate, and fianges'on the vertical edges of the back plate, engaging the outer face of the side plate, said side plates to fold against the inner face of the top plate, said back plate to fold uponthe side plates, and said flanges to engage the opposed side edges of the top plate when the back plate is in folded position.
9. A camp stove comprising a top plate, side plates hinged to the top plate, and arranged to fold inwardly upon the inner face of the top plate, a back plate hinged to one end edge of the top plate and arranged to fold inwardly upon the side plates, a chimney comprising .a plurality of plates hingedly secured to one ancther'along their vertical edges, one of said plates being-hinged at its lower edge to the top plate and arranged to fold fiat upon and longitudinally of the top plate and either of the plates which is connected with the last named plate being adapted to fold flat against the'top plate, all of said chimney plates to lie in the same plane in engagement with .one'another when folded, said top plate having an opening therein registering with the chimney. v
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Anqeles, California,'this 10th day of August, 1914;
ALBERT J.
' In presence of G. T. HAGKLEY, LGRRAINE E. DURROW.
KLUNK.
