INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENG-INE.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Feb, 22, 1916'.
Application filed July 5, 1913. Serial No. 777,401.
YState 'of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion vengines and is directed particularly to the provision of a slmple and effective means for adJusting or changing the size and capacity of the cylinder, that is,..
the compression-space ofthe cylinder.
A further object of this invention is the provision' of ,a series or set of plates, one or more of which is adapted to be detachably secured to the cylinder head whereby the capacity of the compression spare may be varied to meet various conditions of workv ing, fuel, etc.
ings formin ,a part hereof and which show an embodiment of my invention applied to an oil engine for illustration purposes only, it Abeing Iunderstood that various changes may be made in'practice withinY the scope of the claim without digressing from 'my inventive' idea. l
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents' a vertical sectional View taken through a portion of the piston, cylinder and cylinderhead of an oil engine, showing my invention in-use; Fig. 2 is a, perspective view of one of the plates, termed for convenience, 'compression plates.
It isV well known that the different liquid fuels used in internal combustion engines have different chemical properties due to difference in grade, process of refining and origin, and that the flash point varies ,as well, and for these reasons it is necessary to provide some means vfor changing the com'- pression, particularly where it is desired to use a stock engine for different fuels and different grades of fuel. Therefore it is the purpose of th is invention to provide a simple and eflicient means for varying the capacity of the compression space of the cylinder and thereby varying the compression pressure of the explosive mixture.
Referring now to the drawings, thenumeral 1 designates the cylinder, 2 the cylinder head, A3 the piston, 4 the igniter head, 5 the igniter hood, 6 the igniter spoon and 7 the fuel nozzle. These features of construction are well known in this art'and do not need further explanation and disclosure.
, In Fig. l is shown a plurality of plates 8,
. which are shaped to it the cylinder head and detachably secured thereto as by bolts 9. It 'I is to be noted that the plates 8 are of differf ent thicknesses. This is for the purpose of readily obtaining any desired size of the compression-space of the cylinder. In assembling, changing or reversing, it is only necessary to remove the cylinder head, when convenient access may be had to the securing means 9. V In the manufacture and sale of engines, a plurality or set of plates is furnished with each stock engine so that the necessary changes maybe readily made as desired to meet' the varyingworking conditions.
Another advantageous feature of'this in5 vention, is the fact that the plate or plates act as a he" absorbing'element, giving out the heat ddii-ing the compression stroke of the'piston and keeping the temperature df the combustion chamber up to the desired ture between the jacket and the heat of the explosion'being considerable and having an injurious effect on the cylinder head.
What I claim is:- y In an internal combustion engine, incombination with a cylinder, an igniter head on y one end thereof, an igniter spoon connected to said igniter head and extending into saidy cylinder, a fuel nozzle entering said cylmderl 1`00 plates adapted to be'attached to saidend of in'presene 0 ftwo witnesses; the cylinder to reduce the Compression space thereof,v Vsaid plates ealch. having 'a central 5 aperture -to-l permit them to be passed over NVtxesses:
said ignitefspoom and 4means forcdetach# j Q',G. DEANE, v .ublyconnecting them tgo said cylinder end. HENRY BREWER.
labove said igniter spoon, a plurality Vof In whereof-:lumi m-y'sigvnatm'e,
