om/WAJL AMOS T. TRUE, OF ALLENS MILLS, MAINE.
i MACHINE FOR FINISHING SKEWER`BLANKS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 3, 1915.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos'T. TRUE, a citi zen of the United States, resident of Allens Mills, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Machines for Finishing Skewer-Blanks and the like; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as applied, with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary view showing the end abutment or block.
rlhe invention has relation to improvements in machines for pointing or finishing skewers, having for its object to provide means, bearing upon the skewer blanks and pressing said blanks against the roughened peripheral surfaces of the lateral or carrying wheels, that will Aprovide the necessary friction to cause the blanks to turn upon said wheels in the pointing or finishing operation, and yet will be of such nature as to reduce the friction to the minimum degree required.
This invention is applicable to machinery for finishing cylindrical blanks of various descriptions.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letters e, e designate the lateral or carrying wheels referred to in my Patent No. 970,667, dated Sept. 20, 1910, which is referred to for the general operation of the machine, said wheels having roughened peripheral surfaces o, and it is the endless belt, engaging and carrying the skewers upwardly around said lateral wheels.
Bearing upon the skewer blanks b, and causing them to turn while the cutters u, o, operate upon the butt and point ends of the skewers, are a series of rollers 2, 2, preferably provided in duplicate series, one series being located near each end portion of the blanks, over said lateral wheels. These rollers are each mounted upon an arm 3, extending radially of the lateral wheels, the arms engaging perforations 4, 4 of 'aro-form top pieces 5 of a frame 6, said rollers and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
serial No. 37,999.
the lower ends of the arms fitting between arc- form bottom pieces 7, 7, which limit the lateral movement of the arms and rollers, radial end pieces 8, 8 of said frame limiting any movement of the rollers out of radial relation, inasmuch as the carrying arms of the rollers are placed close together, in contact with each other within the frame bounded by said lateral bottom pieces and said end pieces. The series of rollers in each frame 6 is preferably in duplicate, with the carrying arms upon the voutside in contact with the bottom pieces of the frame and in contact with each other, and the rollers on the inside in contact with the lateral surfaces of the next or adjacent series, the two series of rollers in each frame being arranged to lap joints, and suitable abutments or blocks 9, 9 being provided at the ends of the respective frames to preserve this lap joint arrangement. The rollers, being comparatively small, and lapping joints, will accommodate themselves to the irregularities of and the spaces between the skewers.
In order to press the rollers downwardly against the skewer blanks in yielding manner, coiled springs 10, 10 are located upon the carrying arms, said springs bearing at their lower ends against collars 11, 11 of said arms, and at their upper ends bearing against the top pieces of the frame.
In the use of this invention, the skewers will be turned as required, as they are presented to the cutter wheels, and the line of skewers carried by the belt will move with decreased friction past the pressure devices, the machine being thereby made easy running, its capacityrincreased and the power required reduced.
The frames 6, 6, or one of said frames, is usually made adjustable, by slot and bolt connections 12, 12, so that the rollers carried by said frames may be adjusted to suit skewers of varying lengths.
I claim:
1. In a machine for finishing skewer blanks and the like, a carrying belt for the blanks, a member coperating with the blanks and against which the lower surfaces of the blanks bear, a frame located above said member, a series of spring-pressed radial carrying arms in said frame, said arms being in contact with each other at their edges and in contact with said frame at their outer sides, and a series of rollers carried by and located at the inner side of the planes of said arms, said rollers being in contact with each other at their inner sides.
2. In a machine for finishing skewer blanks and the like, a carrying belt for the blanks, lateral wheels having roughened peripheral surfaces against Which the blanks have bearing, a frame located above each of said lateral Wheels, duplicate series of spring-pressed radial carrying arms in each frame, said arms being in Contact with each other at their edges and in contact with said frame at their outer sides, and duplicate series of rollers carried by and located at the inner sides of the planes of said arms,
said rollers being spaced apart from each 15 other at their circumferential edges and in contact with each other at their inner sides. In testimony whereof I affix my signature7 in presence of two Witnesses.
