UNITED STATES PATENT oniuon.
CHARLES A. MQKERAHAN. or WILMERDING, PENNSYLVANIA.
cHUmv.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. NIC1IE I%A HAN, a citizen of the United States, residmg ,at Wilmerding, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to churns, and more particularly to a churn of the reciprocating container type.
One object of my invention is to provide a churn of the above type of simple construc tion and adapted to be cheaply manufactured.
Another object of my invention is to provide a churn having means for facilitating the charging and discharging of the container.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following more detailed description of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a churn embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 a front elevation of the churn, with the container in position for charging or discharging; and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the churn.
According to my invention, the churn may comprise round uprights or standards 1 mounted in pedestal blocks 2, a crank shaft 3 journaled in hearings in the pedestals 2, a shaft 1 provided at opposite ends with semicylindrical guide members 5 adapted to reciprocate on the inner portions of the uprights 1, a disk 6 carried by the shaft 4, a container 7 adapted to rest on the disk 6, a cover plate 8 provided with guide members 9 similar to the guide members 5, a forked connecting rod 10 for operatively connecting the crank shaft 3 with the shaft 41, a gear 11 secured to one of the projecting ends of crank shaft 3, a gear 12 meshing with gear 11 and rotatably mounted on one of the standards 1, the gear 12 being provided with a handle 13. The opposite end of the crank shaft 3 perferably carries a fly wheel 14 in order to provide a more steady and uniform churn action.
The container 7 is provided at the bottom with two or more pivoted thumb screw clamps 15 for engagement with lugs 16 carried by the disk 6 and similar clamps 17 are provided at the top of the container 7 for engagement with lugs 18 on the cover plate 8.
A rod 19 connects the upper ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

standards 1 and carries an S hook 20 adapted for engagement with an eye bolt 21 secured to the cover plate 8.
At the central portion of the opposite sides of the container 7 there are bosses 22 having recesses therein, and thumb screws 23 have screw threaded engagement in the standards 1, the thumb screws being adapted to be screwed into the recesses of the bosses 22 when the container 7 is elevated to a position in which the thumb screws are in alinement with the recesses.
In operation, the container is placed on the disk 6 and the thumb screw clamps 15 are applied to clamp the container to the disk, the container is then charged, and the cover plate 8 is clamped onto the top of the container. The container is then reciprocated by turning the handle 13 until the churning is completed.
In order to remove the contents of the churn, the container 7 is moved by turning the handle 13 so that the recesses in the bosses 22 are brought into alinementwith to turn the container 7 on its trunnion supports in order to discharge, the contents of the container into a suitable receiving vessel.
After emptying, the container may be again charged, the disk 6 brought up to position and clamped, and the cover plate 8 unhooked and clamped to the top of the container. The thumb screws 23 are then screwed out of the recesses in the bosses 22 and the churn is again ready for the churning operation.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a churn, the combination with stand ards, a container, a support for said container slidably mounted on said standards and removably secured to the container, of
clamps for securing the container to said my hand. means, of removable trunnions mounted in CHARLES A. McKERAHAN; said standards for supporting said container 5 upon disconnection from the reciprocating; Wltnesses' means, to permit charging and discharging A. M. CLEMENTS, of the container. H. O.
