GEORGE E. DARROW AND eaovna c. TUDIDER, or EUGENE, OREG01\T.
EXTENSION STEP-LADDER.
Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ,EXiZQIlSlOll Step-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in step laddersand more particularly to an extension step ladder and theprimary object of the invention is to provide a ladder winch, 1n its normal position, is
reasonably small, but which may be quickly and readily adjusted to various greater heights. 1 I
A further o'hgect of the inventlon 18130 provide a ladder formed of two sections adjustable longitudinally with respect "to one another and which in the normal positlon of the device fit one within'the other to form one complete ladder.
till another object resides in providingstepsor rungs on each section of the ladder, which steps or rungs are adapted to aline in the norinal'position of the device to form step sections for the ladder. V
A still further object resides in providing interlocking sliding means between the sections of the ladder. V
A. further object resides in providing a de vice whichis simple and durable in construeT tion, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very etlicient and usefulin operation.
With these invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to.
and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims." 7
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application: Figure 1 is per.- spective view of a device constructed'in ac cordance withour invention. Fig; 2 is a side elevation thereof its extended position; and-Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal sectionthrough one legof the device.
In describing the invention we shall refer :1
' said to be the movable sectionthereof. r
to thedrawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which L designates a ladder of the general folding type consistmg of side-bars B, steps S and a hinged support or prop K.
Specification of Letters Patent.
mation of the steps S.
and. other obj ects. in view, our
The invention primarily contemplates the provision of an extensible construction and to this end substantially stationary and movable sections are provided.
The side bars B each consist of the spaced apartv rails 1 and 2 which are properly braced together at their lower ends by means of the intermediate block or the like 3. The upper ends of the r'ailsl and 2' arebraced by means ofthe bracing clamps 4, the latter i also forming stops for the movable section,v
as will appearpresently. Slidably mountwhich are snugly received in similarly Patented Feb. 22,1916. ApplicationfiledMay 14,1914. Serial No. 838,421. r
ed between the rails of each bar B is an addi I i vt' onal rail '5, the latter having a V-shaped rib or the like, 6, along the edges thereof,
shaped grooves or channels 7 in the opposed inner edges of rails l and 2.. The steps S each consist of a pair of spaced apart sectionsor rails, one section being carried rigidly between each pair of side rails and rigidly; carried at regular intervals between the rails 5 arethe additional sections .9 which are adapted to fit between the spaced sections and complete the-step 8801310118 S. The sections 8, :however, are f steps or rungs for the loweror stationary portion, of the device, while the sections 9 form the, same for. themovable portion of, the 7 device. In the lowermost position of the 1 movable section of the device, thelower ends of railszwillabut the bloclrsg and in such position the sections 8. and 9 will properly aline with one another tocomplete the for i is hingedlyengaged the support or prop K.
This latter consists ofthexlegs :or rails. 11"
which are directly hinged to the member '10 and the additional legs or rails-'12 to which the 1-3115 orlegs 11 are adpistably 'connected; .The' legs or'rails 11' are braced'togetheras at 13' andthe lowerends' of the legs or rails 11 ladder while the. remaining parts may "be Mountedon the upper ends oft he rails 1 and 2 isjthe topstepor support 10. to which It is apparentfrom the constructionas i tended, at-will, by merely forcing themovable section of the device upwardly with respect to the stationary section and in order to retain the device in any adjusted position, the friction clamps 15 are provided for the lower ends of the rails 5. These clamps engage the rails 1 and 2 and when I roperly adjusted, cause said rails to bind i in any adjusted position. Addifriction clamps 16 are carried on the p per ends of the. legs or rails 12 for bindengagement with the rails or legs 11, whereby to also secure the latter in various adjusted positions with respect to the "former. The clamps 16, it will be seen, are carried on the stationary portion of the device. while toe clamps 15 are carried on the movable section thereof and the latter clamps are adapted to abut the clamps 4 whereby the outward or upward movement of the movable section is thus limited.
t must be here statedthat the ladder described abore may be constructed of wood, metal or a combination of both and may be of any size and dimension desired; i
From the above description of the construction of our improved device, the operation thereo will be readilyunderstood and it will. be se: i that inexpensive and er cient means for carrying out the objects of toe invention. 7
While we have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set fortln it is obvious tha various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details'oi construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having now described our invention what 7 we believe to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
0nd mentioned side rails to friction'ally bind.
within the V-shapedi grooves of the first mentioned side rails and permit the movable section to be retained in any ad usted POSL tion with respect to the stationary section of the laddeiu 2. In the ladder of the class described a section including side rails, each composed V ot-a pair or"- spaced apart parallel bars and steps 'therebetween, each comprising a pair of spaced apart stepsections, the inner opposed edges of thebars forming the side rails being provided with V-shaped grooves terminatino at their outer ed es in reduced:
flat portions, said groovesextending torthe greatolportion of the length thereof, an additional section including a pair of side rails disposed between the bars itornnn the aforesaid side rails, the last. mentioned rails being each provided with V-shaped ribs to form Wedges, whereby to fit snugly 1n the aforesaid grooves of saidbars, said V-shaped wedges also terminating at their side edges in reduced fiat portions adapted to abut the'i flat portions of the-aforesaid side ra1ls,ad-i
ditional step sections carried by" the last mentioned side rails adapted to, aline withg the aforesaid side sections when the addie tional section is in itslowerinost position and means whereby the lower portions or said last mentioned. side are en aged? with the bars of the firstmentroneds1de rails whereby to cause the v'eshaped wedges to frictionally bind within the V-shaped V grooves and permit the movable section to i be retained in any ad usted posit on withi-respect to the stationary, sectlon. c
In testimony whereoi we aiiix our signatures in presence 5 of two witnesses.
