As a means for securing the flaps in'a concealed position when not being used as protectors I employ any suitable means such as hookslO to fasten .the flaps to y.thelining of the coat as shown in Fig. 1. It will be noted from the construction of the flaps as shownl in Fig. 1 thatv the coat to afford protection to that part of the chestbetween the -lapels usually unprotected by an outer garment, the flaps being buttoned around the throatV of the wearer and serving to protect both'throat and chest.

In the constructionofthe protecting flaps I form them integral with thelapels of the coat as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5. As shown Vin Fig. 5 the lapel is formed byrfolding back a portion of the cloth of the body of the coat and placing thereon cloth of the same material to form the face of the lapel, as usual, and then extending this latter material back of the lapel under the body of the coat to form first,the coat facings 15 andl and finally, the throat protecting flaps as continuations of the latter. Thus the a'ps and the coat facingsnecessarily liefiat in exactly the same plane, and there is consequently no localized bunching or thickening lof the material along the hinged lines of the Hap, as would be the case were the 4 Hap formed separately and connected to the facing by a seam. This is'very important, in the c'ase of overcoats made of heavy cloth. When there is such a seam it causes a ridge on the exterior of the coat that gets more wear'than adjacent parts and causes the nap to rub ofi' along ,a well deiined line that soon marks the outline of what lies beneath., and is objectionable. For this same reason I prevent the edges 5 and 6a of the flap from protrudingion theV Ifront of the coat and, in time, revealing thepres'enc'e and coat.

In order that no seams may be exposed in fastening the throat protecting'fiaps to the coat, lining members 12 and 13 are positioned on the backs of the flaps as shown inFig. 5 and are sewed to the linin 4 Vof the body'of the coat at 14, the ends o these linings being positioned betweenl the body ofthe coat under the' lapel and the portions 15 and 16 forming the backs of the flaps as shown vat 17 in'Fig. 5. I claim is my invention:

In a coat, the combination with the body portion. forming the front of the coat and the under parts of the lapels, of a piece of the same cloth secured to each side of the body portion to constitute in one continu- 1 ous piece the outer part of the lapel, the coat facing and, as a continuation of the latter, a free folding Hap adapted to extend rearwardly and inwardly close against the body portion or forwardly and outwardly so that the iiaps may jointly close the space or opening between thelapels, the facing portion of the piece being secured permanently to the body and extending 4inwardly beyond the fold line of the iap to'lie in B. SOLOMON.
