- To all whom it may con Ja n:
Be it known that I, J 01in J .J oi-inson, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State ot' li linnesota, have invented new and useful improvements in Form-Lock Extensions, oi which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to form lock extensions and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a form lock especially adapted to be used upon cylinder presses for securing the form in proper position upon the bed of the press without necessitati a the use of furniture and which may be easily and quickly operated for the purpose of locking the form in the desired position.
In large printing establishments the desired sizes of form locks arenot always at hand for locking the forms in position. When this is the case it has been the practice heretofore to use furniture which is made of wood and which is usually warped or out of shape. Consequently, when small form is placed on the press the largest sizes 01" the furniture blocks are required to be used in conjunction with the kicking devices. l-Vhen such is the case the sides of the form have to be braced and the form under certain size is always looked to the feeder side which dives quite a space on thefarther side of the form. Therefore, frequently it is necessary to use two extensions for the purpose of properly locking the form in,
trouble lies in keeping; the form solid on the bed. and to prevent it "from bulging and jumping from the bed which it sometimes does. To overcome the foregoingobjections the present form lock extension has been devised, and the same consists of one cross bar that reaches from one barrier to the other and is set in the barrier about onefourth of an inch to keep it from bulging up. This cross bar also has attached to it three ratchet bars. one at each end. and one at a point between its ends to keep the cross bar true. The said ratchet bars pass under the ink plate and thus a. full size form can be placed upon the type bed and operated upon by the cross bar. For smaller forms it is customary to pull the cross bar forward until ittightly engages the form. and thus cross bar 4c the possibility of the form lifting from the type bed is prevented. Pawls are mounted on the end bit the type bed, between the edges of the ink plate. and are actuated by a cam rod to ngae'e the teeth of the ratchet bars, and therefore. the said cross bar held in position against the form. A rotatable shaft extends from the front of the type bed and carries a pinion which engages ratchet teeth upon the cam rod and therefore the said rod may be easily and quickly moved. at will.
In the accompanying drawings F igure 1 is a top plan view of the form lock ere tension. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the form lock illustrating the cam rod thereof in side elevation. Figs. 3 and a are detailed t'ansverse sectional views of the cam rod taken at different points and showing adjacent parts in section. Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation of part of thecam rod and showing cooperative parts in section.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of part oi the cam rod and adjacent parts.
As illustrated in the accompanying dran ing the form lock extension comprises a type bed 1 provided at its side edges with upstanding barriers 2 having; at their inner sides longitudinally disposed grooves A. is movably mounted upon the type bed 1 and the ends of the cross bar 1 enter the grooves 3 whereby the said cross bar is held down in proper position upon the said type bed 1. The cross bar a provided I with fixed ratchet bars 5, one located at each end of the cross bar 4 and the outer edge portions of the terminal ratchet bars 5 lie in the grooves 3 and are adapted to move along the same. One or more intermediate ratchet bars 5 may be provided upon the cross bar 4 and when one is used it is positioned at a point approximately midwa between the ends of the cross bar 4. The bars 5 are provided at their under sides with ratchet teeth 6. An ink plate 7 is mounted on the end of the type bed with the ends of the ratchet bars 5 passing under the ink plate. Guides 8 are mounted at the edge of the type bed 1 and lie under the ink plate T A shaft 12 is journaled under the gear teeth 11. The shaft 12 is provided 7 at its forward end with a knob 1-l which may be used for the purpose of rotating the said shaft. The type bed 1 is provided at its rear edge with extensions 15, having Pawls 17 are movably mounted in the pockets 15 and the pockets 16 located therein.
cams 10 of the rod 9 lie in openings 18 provided in the said pawls. Springs 19 are located in the bottoms of the pockets 16 and gage with the teeth 6 of one of the ratchet bars 5.
From the above description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that when a form is placed upon the type bed 1, the cross bar 4 maybe pulled in a forward direction until it engages the form, whereby the form is securely held in position upon thetypebed. When the cross bar 1 is pulled in a forward direction the ratchet bars 5 follow the same and consequently, the teeth 20 of the pawls 17 engage the teeth 6 of the bars 5 and hold the said bars and the cross bar at in the adjusted positions referred to. When it is desired to disengage the teeth 20 of the pawls 17 from the teeth 6 ofithe ratchet bars 5, the shaft 12 is rotated, whereby the pinion 1.3 engaging the teeth 11 moves the cam rod 9 longitudinally in the guides 8.
Therefore the lower edges of the cams .10
vmove along the lower sides of the openings 18 in the pawls 17 and the said pawls are moved in a downward direction against the influence of the springs 19 and the teeth .20 of the pawls 17 are disengaged from the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, 'D. 0.
teeth 6 located at the under sides of the ratchet bars 5. Therefore the pawls 17 are [tioned upon the type bed 1.
Thus it will be seen that a form lock extension of'simple'and durable structure is provided and that the same'maybe easily and quickly operated to securely hold a form in position and when the form is held by the lock extension the possibility of its dropping or springing from the type bed by reason of an insecure fastening means is prevented.
Having described the invention what is claimed is In combination with a type bed, a form lock extension comprising a cross bar mo-vably mounted upon the bed and having ratchet bars connected therewith, guides mounted on the bed, a cam rod inovably mounted in the guides and provided with cams, said cam rod also having a set of gear teeth, a shaft journaled under the bed, a pinion carried by the shaft and meshing with the teeth of the cam rod, pawls movably mounted in the bed and vengageable with the teeth of the ratchet bars, said pawls having openings adapted to receive the cams upon the cam rod and springs located under the pawls and engaging the same and being under tension with a tendency to hold the pawls toward the teeth upon the ratchet bars. p a
