Description
u GKLE PATENTED JUL 18 1871 PATENT OEEICE.
PHILIP A. SNYDER, OF BUTLERVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HALTER-BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,214, dated July 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. SNYDER, of Butlerville, in the county of Warren and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Halter-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a face view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective representation of buckle as applied.
This invention has relation to an improvement in halter-buckles; and the novelty consists in the construction of the frame of a triple buckle and the mode of arranging the tongues, as hereinafter described; the object being to provide a means of securely attaching the ends ofthe straps to the buckle without sewing or riveting, and in such a manner as to dispose of the superiiuous leather and keep it from clogging up the bucklespaces or chang the horse.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention the buckle-frame is represented with three wings, lettered respectively A B C, and so arranged as to form a resemblance to the letter T. Each win g is provided with three cross-bars, a b c, of which b projects like a loop and holds a tongue, d, the point of which rests on the crossbar a, so that it will be seen that in relation to the form of the buckle-frame all the tongues point inwardly. The straps are attached to the different Wings of the buckle by passing their ends through the spaces between the bars b and c, thence over and around bars a, then placed on the tongues and over the bars b, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. To each halter there are four of these buckles, two on either side. To the lower buckles are attached the ends of the cheek-piece, nose-piece, and chin-piece. To the upper buckles are attached the ends ofthe crownpiece, throat-piece, and cheek-piece. The positions ofthe buckles are shown in Fig. 3.
I am aware that there is no novelty in a triple buckle of itself, as such has been made, but with the tongues pointing outward, which arrangement is a disadvantage, inasmuch as the strain rests on the tongue and consequently the strap is liable to come loose or be slit. Again, in buckling three straps to such a buckle, the ends, if inserted in the central space, come together in an unsightly and inconvenient bunch. The principal feature of my improved buckle as distinguished from the above is in providing each wing with an additional cross-bar and hanging on it the tongue with its point extending inwardly, so that while the straps are buckled securely much of the strain is thrown on the cross-bars, and provision made for disposing of the superfluous leather in the manner clearly described.
I claim as my invention- The halter-buckle herein described, composed of the three wings A B C, with cross-bars a b c and tongues, all arranged substantially as specied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP A. SNYDER.
Vitnesses THORNTON THOMPSON, PETER DOUGHMAN.
